What is that extra ingredient that makes a Brad Pitt or a Tom Cruise or a George Clooney, that superstar charisma? Or is there no such thing and it's just good luck and good lighting that makes a superstar? Who for you has charisma among actors. Or do you think the most charismatic people are in everyday life?

I guess being charismatic is combination of how good human being you are and art of living/ success. How person deal with life challenges and maintain his/ her own personality or reputation. It is all about how the person is who perform flawless success and inspire others to be like him/ her.

I generally don't associate charismatic with being a good person or how they live, some really bad people have been known to be charismatic.

I don't find George Cloony charismatic. With tom and Brad , the camera loves them . They are find actors. they are not just movie idols , they are actors. They seem to not know how beautiful they are.it isn't anything you can teach. You either have it or not.

Yes, Tom and Brad are excellent actors. Also, very versatile. I like Clooney too, I have to say. But I still haven't figured what charisma is yet...?

I just saw my first Clooney film and I still am not a san. I guess I never will be,Charisma is that thing that makes you want to see the person. The thing that a person has that when they come into the room, everybody stops to look. Their personality is that huge. I heard Henry the 8th was that way. ps. This is totally off topic. What is Guy Fox Day?

For most Clooney has it , but not for me. I prefer Clive Owen,I just thought of another artist that had"it', Marlon Brando,he could fill a room with his presence. And Elizabeth Taylor has it too. you are born with it.

I don't know. Just what is charisma.
I work with a man - autistic, developmentaly disabled. For all intensive purposes is non-verbal. Yet, he has charisma, everyone that meets him likes him, no one forgets his name. People go out of there way to find him and say hi to him when he is around.
He has charima-- but I still don't know what it is.

Hi mssnow...yes, long time no see you here. Hope you're well. yes, I agree...it's hard to define. Johnny Depp is a great actor who can play just about any type of character and disappear into each one...charismatic, I'm not sure...but he can certainly put in a compelling performance...

He had those heart throb looks in the early days of "24 Jump Street" etc. (and still does), but it seems he didn't want to go down that path, and prefers to disappear into characters. He has the best of both worlds!

good looks, talent and networking skills are what is required. it is all well and good to have the looks and the talen, but at the end of the day, that is no good if you do not have the appropriate introduction. that is, if you do not have the right person putting you in touch with others who can make you a star then that is as good as useless. you have to be able to pimp yourself like hell. it is no longer about just sleeping with the director, the stakes are higher now. but what with the advent of the internet and youtube it is a little easier to be discovered and, well there is the myriad talent shows that are on tv just lately, ahhhhh gotta love reality tv.

You hit the nail on the head. Networking skills are absolutely essential; and the confidence to use them well. But it's true, today it's easier for young actors than when I started trying for acting success some 30 years ago now...with the myriad talent shows; and also as you say, youtube and myspace and other means of getting your talent out there to the world. Back in my day, you had to depend on the acting newspaper which you bought every week if you wanted to track down auditions.

I think it does exist, though it may be hard to define. It can come from an actor's acting skill, or course, or his or her confidence, ability to create empathy, etc. Or a combination of all of these.
And as you say, some people who are not actors are charismatic in real life. These people may not even be particularly attractive, but have something that appeals to people.

I think you're right: it's not as easy to define as is perhaps commonly thought, and is in fact a combination of factors: the ability to create empathy is very important. And even at that, that may only occur if the actor in question is playing a part tailor-made for them; and with a director who knows how to coax the best out of them.

I can't tell you about charisma in actors but I will tell you about a person I know,
He is in his late 30's, he is not an overly handsome man but he is not ugly either. He is probably 80 or so pounds overweight.
People just flock to him!
I should add he is mentally retarded and is Autistic. He is non-verbal.
Yet, when I take him out in public, people remember him and they greet him. People love him, they flock to him. They want to be with him. Whatever charisma is, he has it. He oozes it.
It is not tangible in any way shape or form, It can't be defined.
BTW I think Tom lost his charisma when he got into the scientology thing...he became an obnoxious piece of everyone's anatomy.

He sounds like a great person. I'm still not sure what charisma is, but maybe if I knew him I would. Having said a one-time friend of mine I thought had charisma; he was a great musician and performer; I always thought he'd be a star, but he wasn't. It's all a mystery to me.
