In it's original sense, it was understood as one with strong character, combining the positive combination of goodness and power.
Today there are those who would understand it as one who is goody-goody , there are things that he/she would not do, connoting someone as restricted or weak.
What do you think of the word virtue today ? And would you agree with those who say that it is an old- fashioned word ?

Being virtuous is certainly a rare trend these days. We are shallow and superficial and virtuosity is magnanimous and requires great strength in character to carry it. I feel, the true perception of the word cannot be there since we have changed, the society has changed and so is the world. That could be the reason why VIRTUE has lost its strength and is being metamorphosed to a far more dilute word as in GOOD. Even though for the learned, virtuosity something more than just good, we common people are happy with it being a synonym of the word.
Having said this, we are living in a time when being good is itself a great thing, at par with being virtue. What do you think?

Mimpi you are very right. Today good living, good behaviour and all things being done in the good/right ways are taken in the same level of virtue.
And since it is rare, probably because of societal pressures and the need for survival, that the relation of the term old fashioned with it.
Thanks for the wonderful response.

I agree Alok. And another thing, I want to mention here is that VIRTUE is one word that has much been profaned or misinterpreted over the years. Today VIRTUE is used in many cases as sarcasm and since virtuous people are almost at the verge of extinction today, it has become a matter of sneer. Hope you are getting me right.
Today, softspokenness, poise, gracefulness, calmness are diluted to being a weakness in the demeanour and so is virtuosity. It's sad, isn't it?

I suppose it would be a fair statement to call the ideal of virtue old fashioned, yes. We all supposedly strive for moral excellence, but society certainly makes it difficult for us to always maintain such a personal code! Righteousness in it's purest form is arguably unattainable in my opinion. For one, is there really a holistic interpretation of what being righteous actually means? What is considered to be this by one, is not necessarily considered to be the same by another.
The immediate picture that comes to mind when you thing of virtue is the virginal, unadulterated individual..... Clothed in white with that everlasting aura of goodness emanating from every pore! lol. But can such an ideal ever really exist anymore? I don't think it can to be honest. Not for one's lifetime anyway! Saying that someone who exhibits such characteristics is weak or restricted may not be entirely accurate verbatim. They may have the intestinal fortitude of a rock! But I do believe that it will certainly make them vulnerable and it's only a matter of time before they must compromise one aspect of their virtue or another, just to survive in this world!
It's a sad reality in my opinion. So in light of all I've shared above, you could refer to virtue as an old fashioned ideal, sure. But I don't feel that the realization of virtuosity was any less difficult in the past than it is now! Society were just far more outwardly pure in their thinking then compared to now. At least in the open! People today are far more outspoken and less protective of honourable ideals. They sure as heck don't create this smoke and mirrors aura of supposed morality like they used to! I hope that angle makes sense.

Good things are forever. They do not fade or lose their meaning even if they are not favored by the ignorant lot.Though it is becoming hard to find the strong and good people a an occasional encounter with those people still happen. They alleviate all the fear of doom in our minds and shine like the beacons of hope.

I'm not sure if its an old fashioned word, but I don't really heard this word much. When I heard word "virtue" all I could think of is "patience" and when I check it in dictionary it also comes with the words righteousness, goodness and moral excellence. The truth is I can't think of anything and I will keep my eyes on this to learn more and what the others think of the word virtue today!

It sure seems like it that "virtue" is becoming an old-fashioned word. But I believe that however technologically-inclined and worldly-inclusive a lot of people have become, there is one or a couple virtues that they hold within them. I may be naive but I want to believe that there is still something good in most of humankind.
