Does anyone know how to add google adsense to a wordpress blog

I have recently created a new wordpress blog and cannot figure out how to add my adsense to it. I have added the text widget but when I paste my adsense template code in the box it will not save for some reason. Am I supposed to add this code to the actual html template? If so since it isnt my template I am using I cannot figure how how to do this either? I am hoping some mylotter with html knowledge can help me
