A dog in New York has caught the Guinness record book's eye as the oldest living dog on Earth. My cat's older than this dog, so I wonder why cats can live longer than dogs do? Could it be their more leisurely ways???

What do you think? He doesn't seem to be too comfy, does he? I feel bad for him, yet, our own elderly become more frail as they age as well, so is it really a surprise this little one needs assistance? So far with my cat, Shady, the only sign of aging, behaviorally, that I've seen in her is that she can't jump up on the bed anymore. She jumps, clings and then climbs. Otherwise, she behaves as she always has - inquisitive, unafraid, and daring any other cat to get in her way.
How about you? Have you had a pet who lived to be a golden oldie?? Tell us about him/her.

i had a male calico (didn't know he was rare at the time)who lived to one week short of 23.he was a happy lil' fart, who was active up until his last day.
i guess the health depends in large part on genetics-i have a 9 yr old right now who has walking problems, they think she already has arthritis, she waddles a bit
instead of walking in a straight line.

My two cats are 23 & 9, Shady and Chloe. Chloe actually gets around better now than she used to because she lost a substantial amount of weight. In order to sit to bathe, she'd have to lean against something for support and then hold the leg up with a front paw in order to wash it. Now, she can do almost anything. No more "skirt" swaying as she walks! LOL
I also believe it depends on genetics in many ways - tendencies are passed on, for sure. Just as they are with us.

that's pretty much what this one does.she's not overweight, and it's probably a good thing.it's funny,i have her brother too but he has no problems.
she'll meow to be carried downstairs rather than walk,it's kind of cute:)
