I want to share my internet connection with my laptop and desktop.I tried with the procedures mentioned in some websites but it ended in failure. My laptop is hp pavilion dv1000, and the desk top is of Benq. Both are having Ethernet as well USB ports. Out modem is of DSL type having one USB and Ethernet port for output.I should use the USB port of the modem for sharing the internet connection as the Ethernet port of the modem will be used by another laptop of ours. Please guide me in a simple way.

There are many ways to share your internet connection sharing. One of the simplest way i think is using windows ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) that is available in Windows default (if you are using windows). All you need is a switch/Access Point(for wireless). First just connect to the internet using your desktop. Your desktop must have 2 LAN card minimum. 1st one is connect to your modem and one is connect to the switch/AP. You can set this in control panel, network connections part. Just follow the step, it's really simple. Set the ip from your LAN 192.168.0.1 and use this ip as gateway and DNS on your laptop or the other computer that want to connect to the internet. The other way is like the other has said, using router or proxy. Hope this help ^_^

There are many ways with which this can be done. 1) Add a router to your DSL modem , from that router use a CAt5 cabel to the switch and from there you can connect your second computer. This is bit expensive deal as you need to buy a router , switch/hub and you need to do some wiring there. 2) Install a proxy server on the computer which is directly connected to your modem and then connect your secondary system to this proxy server. There are various proxy softwares available out there some free some paid. My advice for this would be using a Linux based squid server, Its the based. Take care.

You can share the internet connection one of two ways. If you want to use your laptop and desktop on the same connection separately then you can just hook up one at a time to your modem and use the same account information on each computer. If you want to use them at the same time with your internet connection then you will need to get a router. You can get a router for around $25.00 . New laptops are already equipped with wireless technology to receive the signal from your router but if yours is too old for that you can get accessories with the router that can make you a wireless connection; or you can just use the ethernet port for what they call hard-wired. A router will allow you to use your internet connection with your single modem for several computers at the same time. I personally use this at home to network three computers. They are fairly simple to set up.

afaik, you can use router (wired or wireless) for you to share your internet connection on both of your computers. if you have dsl connection, just plug your dsl directly to your router then if you have 4 output on your router, you can even use 4 computers that is connected to your dsl. you can try linksys router, just visit there site...
