"Dope" on American Idol?

Last night when watching American Idol I was kind of surprised at Randy Jackson's use of "Dope" as an complimentary exclamation when someone gave a good performance. I know I am too old to know all the latest "teenspeak" but since when has "dope" been used as a word for something that is great? What kind of message does this send to all the kids. Or am I being to picky?

I'm glad I am not the only one but he said it quite a few times and I know he has some trange expressions but that was a first for me.

As other have already said, it's been around awhile but you really don't hear it much anymore. At least, not in the way Randy used it! I know it was really popular when I was younger but I don't think I ever caught onto it. I've always stuck with words like awesome. LOL
If it makes you feel better, my mom wondered the same thing.

I have wondered that myself
another odd one I heard is "junk"
I was watching Extreme Makeover: Home edition and this kid said that the room they designed and built for him was "junk"
the designers were a bit crushed until the mother explained that "junk" meant good
since when did the word "junk" refer to something good?

I don't watch American IDOL anymore. To many good songs are being ruined. Their are many dopes that have been on that show. The only person I really like is Simon.
