Obama on Jay Leno Last Night

So who caught the President on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno last night? And what did you think of his performance, especially what he had to say about "special olympics?" If you missed it, here is what he said: "Appearing on "The Tonight Show" Thursday, the president told host Jay Leno he'd been practicing at the White House's bowling alley but wasn't happy with his score of 129. Then he remarked: "It was like the Special Olympics or something." The audience laughed, but the White House quickly recognized the blunder. The Special Olympics, founded in 1968, is a global nonprofit organization serving 200 million individuals with intellectual disabilities. On his way back to Washington on Air Force One, Obama called the chairman of the Special Olympics, Tim Shriver, to say he was sorry -- even before the taped program aired late Thursday night." So do you think the comment was in bad taste and poor judgement? Yes, he apologized but I think that he shouldn't have said this at all. It is like he didn't *think* about what he was saying or the implications of it at all. What do you think? Bad taste? Poor judgement? Stupid? Or all of above?

I saw a commercial saying he would be the first president on a show like that while he is still in office. I thought DUMB right away thinking the president shouldn't be making time for comedy shows when he has a coutry to save! Then when I heard what he said I thought DUMB again. Maybe the reason no other president has gone on a late night talk how is because they were smart enough to realize that everything they say, even as a joke, would be analyzed. Obama's gotta stop doing the celebrity circuit and go back to work. I think it was poor judgement, and could hurt those who ARE in the special olympics. I'm sure it was just a slip up - not that he's a horrible person who hates them or anything. But as the president he should know better. Let's just say this.... when someone on Big Brother called the kids he worked with "retards' (kids he loved and really cared for).... everyone protested until he got FIRED from his job working with the kids! But the president says something basically at the same level and it gets "oh well, he apologized". Whatever! PC people will pick and choose what they get in an uproar about, and I be they WON'T get in an uproar about this because he's their guy!

I agree...a different story/outcome if Bush (either one) had said/done the same thing. I had to laugh when you said Obama should stop doing comedy shows, in the back of my head I'm seeing him at the circus next. lol

I would say he was not thinking when he said it. It definitely was a big blunder. And I am sure he will be hearing about it for sometime to come, especially from the parents of those that are in the Special Olympics, or handicapped.

We will see. I'm betting that we won't hear too much about it--it will die down. His name isn't Bush. lol

People do put their feet in their mouth, all people. I am impressed that he realized what a blunder it was before the show hit the air. On the other hand, I also believe that this blunder reveals how he perceives the people in our society who have less ability than average people do, and it does not look good to me for that thought to have even entered his mind, let alone rolled out of his mouth.

that part of the show was aired in the news here in the philippines. the way i see it when he said that, he meant to criticize his own ability but of course, since he is a president, he must be careful of what he is saying.

Talk about blown out of proportion. WOW!! He was just talking and put his foot in his mouth making a joke which I bet about 85-90% of Americans have made at some point or another. I don't think because he is the President, we should fault him for being human. He's no more the perfect person than the rest of us are and I don't think we should put him up on a pedastal and throw stones at him until we are perfect ourselves. Cut the guy a little slack and let him make a mistake, he called and apologized so let's all let it go. I personally like the fact that he appeared on the Tonight Show, he is a more visable president than the others and seems to want to make himself open to all genres of people. I hate seeing the presidents that won't appear anywhere unless it's a state of the union. It's a little old-fashioned.

Angel, I don't think it was blown out of proportion at all. I think we would still be hearing about it if Bush would have done and said the same thing. I believe he did the right thing in apologizing and the republicans have let it drop now. If the situation were reversed, we would still be hearing those pitiful democrats yelling about the stupid thing Bush said and how evil it was to go on a late night TV show. I don't approve of the appearance on the late show at all. He is using taxpayer's money jetting around --a big waste of money and time. Doesn't he have something better to do like run the country than jet around trying to become more popular? His ratings are going down now--people are starting to see the real thing now and getting concerned. Btw, I'm not a republican either.

He isn't exactly the one who is "printing money." That is up to the treasury department and they are dealing with that part of things. The current president did step into a financial crisis and he's going to have a lot of things to clean up but it's going to take time. Like I said, at least he's making himself visable to the American people and not hiding behind the desk in the Oval office like so many other presidents have chosen to do.

People act like if one is in a public office one isn't allowed to be human. It's human to say something without thinking. He wasn't insulting the Special Olympics, he was insulting himself. People take things too seriously. Anyone who's doing poorly at something, if they're trying to laugh it off, says something derogatory about themselves. It lightens the tension, gives everybody a laugh, and if the one who said it is the one who's doing poorly it gives the other people a chance to say something without upsetting the poor performer. It's either that or everybody has to bite their tongue to try not to give offense. He made a mistake and said Special Olympics. Big deal. When anyone I work with says something like "I'm special." the automatic answer is "Yeah, special ed!" It's a standard joke at home. My hubs started it, cause he spent a year, while in school, being in that "class." Not insulting the class but insulting a person claiming to be special.

I am with Suzy on this one. Possibly because I work with adult disabled. I have to work very hard at getting them to not put themselves down. It does not help to have the president do it.

It's not a standard joke in my house to make fun of someone by saying their "special". I'm far from being PC, I actually get very annoyed with PC, but I don't think it should be so common to use "retarded" or "special" as a way to insult someone. Imagine how anyone in that "class" a you called it would feel if they knew that people use their disability or learning ability as a way to insult others.

I don't usually get involved in political discussions but I will just this once. I really don't see what the big deal is. It just shows that he is human. I'm sure there are many people who joke like that but won't admit it. I agree it probably shouldn't have been said on national tv. I'm glad he apologized. Honestly, I am getting sick of everyone picking on every little thing he does. And I am not talking about you. Its everywhere you look. And no, I didn't vote for him.

For me nobody is perfect. heck i may have said the same thing if i were in his shoes. We all are guilty of it. I just hate the fact that someone who no one has ever heard something says something similar its funny as all get out, but yet if someone of power or fame says something stupid on air or in front of an audience, it an instant outrage and drama fest. He made a dumb remark...oh my God people he is human after all...perfection is not the name of the game here.

Going on a talk show is another example of how human he is and dumb! Late night TV is not for presidents to go to to show off and try and be a comedian at someone else's expense. I think he did a double whammy on this one and for a president, not good at all. Hey, maybe he will make a circus appearance soon! He seems to love jetting here and there for silly things. He is a big and wasteful spender!

I think the man has a lot on his mind and he is human. Yes, it was not nice of him to say that but I am sure he did not mean it to sound so bad. I think he just made a human mistake like a lot of people do. And, I think it was good of him to apologize for it. Some people don't even say that they are sorry when they do make mistakes. I think we should cut the man some slack he just has to much on his mind. **Peace and Love get's you through everything in Life**

I think, anyway, he should not say so! Since can take part in the "special Olympics" of the people, In any case, his spirit is very commendable! Yes courage, perseverance in order to encourage them to take part in "Special Olympics". I think that us ordinary people are not able to do it! I want to, we look at any problem, they should look worthy of our place of study! Rather than look at someone else's mistake! So that we can continue to progress! Also more tolerant to others. In this way, we will every day more fun!

Everyday we go deeper into debt with Obamas spending. He has the highest budget ever and jetting off to talk shows on late night is a big waste of my taxpayer's dollars. People need to get with reality. This guy is bringing the country down...in more ways than one!

I cant lie, I've made similar jokes, but only around close friends, never so any disabled hear it, and I know I'm not dumb enough to say it for millions of people to hear it, and him being in power has nothing to do with him being scrutinized for it, I'm not in any kind of power, and im not a celebrity, but I guarantee you if I would have done the same thing I would have caught heat for it as well, geez does this man need to drop a nuke right in the middle of the states before people realize hes not fit to run this country?

Isn't President Obama known for getting off track without a teleprompter? There he is PC because the teleprompter is there to guide him. He is human, and humans do make mistakes. I'm sure when it was out of his mouth he probably knew of the blunder. He wasn't insulting the kids, he was making fun of himself, just like when he called himself a mongrel... referring to his biracial heritage. I didn't see any biracials taking exception to that remark. I don't care for his politics, but I think he is only human, and he puts his clothes on every day just like we do.. and I make mistakes from time to time... and I hope that society wouldn't judge me too harshly for it just because I said something they didn't like.
