Are We Really Wrong With IVF?

I just do not know how to describe my mixed feelings as I read how recent studies conducted have discovered a staggering 30% of test tube babies born are likely to have DEFECTS! When IVF was introduced, I was so happy for those childless couples who could eventually have a child of their own. I was indeed awed by this advancement in medical sciences amidst the joy that I have along with many. Yet, there were people who are skeptical and critical with this technology especially with the perception that we are playing God. However, I still have faith that this is God sent. With this news, it just made me realize that life is indeed very fragile and that we should treasure our health and most of all our life. Though we may improve in leaps and bounds in sciences and technologies yet this news has certainly send a message home that we can never ever be on par as God. I am just praying that God will intervene and help us especially those who are conceiving via IVF here. Am I naive? Is this happiness of mine unfounded? What's your opinion? I am all for IVF.. My sister just gave birth to beautiful twins thanks to IVF. She would have never concieved without it. So I am very thankful for all these new procedures they come out with. To hear that you cant get pregnant naturally is very devastating news for so many people. there is now a way these couples can become parents and I think its wonderful

luvmysons, Like you, I am all for IVF in your sister's case, and I hope that they are happy ever after. However, like all other advancements in sciences there will always be some abusers lurking to misuse such technology. When this happens I think if the authorities do not step in then I suppose the Divine Hand will start creating circumstances. Sometimes, I just wonder if these birth defects are actually grave reminders to all of us especially the abusers that there will be consequences for their karmic ways. Thanks for your response.

Life can at times be very unfair. In a hospital some pregnant ladies might be having an ultrasound scan whilst some pregnant ladies are having an abortion. In another wing of the hospital there is a fertility clinic helping ladies get pregnant using IVF. There will be a special care baby unit where the premature and disabled babies spent time after they are born. Some ladies spend years attempting to get pregnant but don't manage it. So they deserve to have fertility treatments including IVF. It is sad to know that testing is done in pregnancy to find out if the baby is normal. I found out about the spina bifida and hydrocephalus at 36 weeks pregnancy. I had him in a naturally planned pregnancy. I love my son that has got birth defects. 30% is like 3 in every 10 IVF babies. It is demanding to be the mother of a disabled baby or child. It is rewarding to care for a dear little person. Disabled people are nice and should be valued in society. IVF is right as a last resort for a lady that can't have a baby is the natural way.

sky, I think this is dampening here. IVF undeniably has given much hopes to the destitutes who cannot conceive and have babies the natural way. Yet, there's is so much psychological effect and trauma for those who undergo IVF, which sets me thinking if this form of treatment is a blessing or a bane. Oh yes, the issue of playing God is certainly another concern where I am wondering at whatever is happening and developing into with this. I am sure we have read how people would want the child of their deceased lover, husband or surrogate. In this area, I feel that this is not right and could just be the beginning of more severe consequences. Happy mylotting!

artemeis, I think you have hit the nail here, and I do agree with you here on the possible abuses of IVF today. I just hope that the authorities will get to it so that this medical advancement could not be used to create "monsters" at the end of the day. IVF should be administered to couples who cannot conceive normally and it should be approved discreetly so that there is no abuse or hidden addendum where it will harm the birth child. Thanks for your response.
