Yes, it is true.
John Potter, the Post Master General of the USPS or the US MAIL, says the USPS is in serious financial trouble. Among the possible solutions are 5 day delievery, lay offs, and early retirement combined with the elimination of management positions.

I say that if I were appointed the Post Master General I could make the USPS profitable. This is based on my experience as an USPS contract mail delievery person. The USPS made money on all mail delievered by me as a contractor. So, here's what you do. Make'm all contractors! Problem solved.
What do you say?

I think that is a good idea. They also need to become competitive with UPS and FedEx. I would rather pay a little more to use FedEx, atleast I know my package will get there and they have much better service. I couldn't tell you the last time I sent something through the post office. This should be privatized anyway.

You probably sent something with the USPS the last time you sent something with the UPS or Federal Express. Many do not know it but in order to be more competitive, both UPS and Federal Express have business agreements with the USPS where the USPS makes final delievery on many of their packages. These same companies also have arangements where the mailman can pick up packages for them, too!
UPS and Federal Express do this because it is extremely difficult to profitably and efficiently cover the entire country for delievery. Only the most dense urban areas can be served for the most profit. As the USPS must visit every mailbox every business day, other shippers like UPS and Federal Express have the USPS make final delievery into many small towns and rural areas.

"You probably sent something with the USPS" should read "You possibly sent something with the USPS". It would only read "probably" if you send packages to small towns and rural areas.

I say when is Congress going to start taking pay cuts? Why do the get insurance when they can well afford their own? Why should we pay for theirs when they aren't doing their jobs?
The get perk after perk after perk and the country is crashing around them...

Without question, Congress should take a pay cut. Their budgets for staff should be cut back, too. Then maybe they would work on bills themselves and know what is in them. Most egregious is the Congressional retirement system. It should be abolished and all members of Congress only be eligible for Social Security. I'd even transfer already retired members to SS from their Congressional Retirement.

Sounds like a good idea to me. I don't even believe that my postman delivers on Saturday. Too many Saturdays go by and nobody sees mail. I think he does what he feels like when he feels like it...very weird.

I promise, one call to the local postmaster will solve any problem with your local carrier. If not, tell him you are calling the Manager of Post Office Operations. That's the postmaster's boss.

The local post office has some of the nastiest people you would ever want to meet. They have been there for years. You must live in "nice" valley.

A letter or phone call to the district Manager of Post Office Operations would change their attitude. The POO (as in Winnie the Poo) (nick name in post office lingo) has immense authority. He can demote a postmaster to clerk or transfer him without asking anyone's permission. He has that much authority all on his own.
Just call some other larger post office and ask for the phone number of the Manager of Post Office Operations for that area. They will give it to you as long as you explain you are not going to complain about them.

I find it inherintly funny that not one single person in this failing company has volunteered to slash their own salary by as much as half or take pay cuts for all the executives making 10 million a year. What's an extra $5 million gonna cost you when you're making $10 million a year? Might not get to take that extra trip to Cabo during the winter months? If you cut your salary in half when you're in charge like that, people like me and everyone else who work for a paycheck wouldn't have to worry about getting their job slashed and having to compete against 5000 people for 10 jobs available in this market right now. It's tough.
But not one single person wants to cut their salary. It's keep their salary, and to hell with everyone else.

The highest paid USPS employee is the Postmaster General. He makes $258,840 per year. No one in the USPS makes millions per year. I also had to explain to someone else that no carriers are making 100K dollars per year. The pay of USPS employees is good, but not fantastic.
However, your point concerning general pay cuts is accurate and well made. All USPS employees should take pay cuts to save the USPS. Given a 15% pay cut, I doubt if any of them would quit. If they did, there would 1000 people applying for their job.

Oddly, my mother (who has no trouble giving opinions) told me to get a job at the Post Office because it pays good, is safe, and secure. I had to call her up last week and say 'hey, remember when you told me to...'

Actually, the USPS still is a good place to work. It is not going out of business, only getting smaller. The problem is it takes years to get a job there. Literally hundreds apply for each available position. It took my wife almost 5 years to get a job and then she had to work part time for another 5 years before becoming full time. This is NOT unusual, but typical. I should mention that when my wife was applying, she already had almost 5 years experience delievering the US MAIL with me as a contractor. Still, even though she was experienced and with good references, it still took almost forever to get hired.

If the Post Office is so fiscally troubled, how come they could afford to give a huge pay hike to the Postmaster General?

You are exactly right. John Potter should be fired, not given a raise. They should make me Postmaster General. I promise to make the USPS profitable through the means listed in my comment to ladyluna above. I'll do the job for 1/2 what Potter makes as a patroitic duty.
