Well with spring comes the arrival of the song birds to Minnesota. They had started to show up a week and a half ago. Then we got cold, and snow etc. Anyhow this is the seeds I add to the feeder. It contains, sunflowers, corn, white millet, milo?, and other grains etc. What do you feed your birds? Do you buy specific seeds to attract just one variety of bird? Me, I use wild birdfood to attrack any and all birds that wish to stop by for my viewing pleasure.

Last year I found a good deal at Tractor Supply on bird seed like what you're describing. I ending up with piles of food on the ground that nobody would eat--they wanted only the sunflower seeds. So this year I'm feeding black oil sunflower seed exclusively and there is no waste at all!

Your mix probably had a lot of red millet in it. It's a pretty little red seed and makes the mix look nice...and birds hate it. There isn't a singe species, as far as I know, that eats it. It discourages birds, and yes, the ones that do come to the feeder just knock it out to make a mess. I stick to de-shelled sunflower seeds too. In the winter I put out suet and thistle seed too.

The only Milo I know is a granulated malty chocolate type powder that you mix with milk? It's very popular in Australia and is supposed to be full of a number of essential vitamins and minerals. I wonder if it's the same thing? I used to feed wild birds millet and would tie it in bunches to a tree just near my rear verandah. I also had some local bottlebrush trees as well that would attract a lot of wild bords when they flowered. The odd thing about where I live now though, is that I don;t see many birds at all. Apart from pigeons, Cairo doesn't seem to have many other types of birds in abundance. Not hat I've seen anyway!

Yes accordng the the person below this it is a grain. I knew it was a grain, just not what family it was from. My wife works for a man that is from Answar originally. They go back at least twice a year as he has property there. I've never been there but some day wished I could.

You must be from Australia? At least that is what they said in the reference about Milo in Wikipedia. They talked about the milk drink. I find myself wondering if it (the milk drink Milo) is the same as Ovaltine here in the US.

I am from Australia, yes!
I know Ovaltine also, but Milo is a little different. It's similar in taste I guess, but not quite the same. I used to drink Milo all the time by mixing it with ice cold milk. We also used to sprinkle it on ice cream. Thanks for the BR too Grandpa Bob!

It's funny you should say that. I had a bird singing here at two-thirty in the morning yesterday. I can't imagine it's a nightingale at this time of year, so I'm intrigued as to what it was. Do you know of any birds that sing in the dark? It was a dark moon also, so it wasn't singing by the light of the moon!
When it comes to feeding, I feed seed, peanuts and cake crumbs to the birds, plus I like to hand a coconut shell from the table, filled with a mix of fat and seeds. I don't try to attract one kind of bird, no... I love to see all sorts, and use wildbird seed like you.
Brightest Blessings my friend.

Still too chilly at nights for most our local songbnirds here in Minnesota. Another month and I'll start seeing the wrens and finches etc I am sure. I love watching those tiny finches at the feeder. They go at it so fast they look really nervous. I have no idea what birds sing at night. But my guess is that this bird sleeps during the day so it's normal for them.

Milo is sorghum, and resembles millet. As far as I can see, the only birds it attracts are pigeons and doves. It sounds like you have a good mix, blended to attract a variety of birds. It's also good that it doesn't contain red millet...birds hate that stuff and just scatter it out of the feeders. Then it makes a weedy mess in that area of your yard or garden. Here's a good website that explains different birdseed ingredients and the birds they attract. You have to scroll down for that breakdown, but it is informative. http://www.wild-bird-watching.com/Bird_Seed.html

All the scavenger birds lopve all the seeds it seems.
There's a pile of seeds on the ground and that's where the blackbirds and squirrels congregate eating the scraps.
Thanks for the informative link also. Greatly appreciated.

Milo is a crop also known as grain sorghum. It is used as people food in other countries, and as animal food mostly in the United States. I just buy whatever when it comes to bird food. I know that black oil sunflower seeds attract cardinals.

I usually buy wild birdfood, it attracts all kinds of birds, but I've noticed we have a lot of cardinals that come and eat, I also buy the black sunflower seeds, they seem to like those the most, I usually just mix both kinds together.
