i was skimming through some pet/dog breed books at barnes and noble and i could have sworn that i read that dogs can have ADHD but i cant find anything since now that ive been trying to look it up to verify.. is it possible or is it usually an obedience problem? my dog is a lab/boxer mix that seems to definitely qualify for it since shes a good behaving dog but she gets so hyper she seems to forget everything she was taught to not to do lol

My sister inquired about a dog from a local rescue society and was told that it had developed "obsessive compulsive tendencies" of going on its paper and trying to pee every 10 minutes. I honestly didn't know that dogs could have OCD but evidently they can.
I did a little research on the ADHD question and came up with this:
http://www.petplace.com/dogs/hyperactivity-in-dogs/page1.aspx
Basically, the article says that dogs "probably don't" have ADHD but more likely hyperactivity, which wouldn't be the same thing.
This fellow is a professional dog trainer and he doesn't hold much stock in canine ADHD either... he also leans towards hyperactivity:

A lot of what I've been reading says that hyperactivity (and even ADHD, if the person supports that there is a canine type) often results from very active dogs getting insufficient exercise for their needs or dogs that are accidentally rewarded when they act in an overly excitable manner.
Hope this helps! Oh.. and your dog must be adorable if she's a lab/boxer mix! :D :D

thanks! and yeah she is.. she looks like a lab but her facial features (muzzle) and personality is like a boxer.. she has the lean body and long legs of a boxer too.. of course with her being black its hard to tell the features unless you are in person with her..

I think, generally, there are certain dog breeds who have really hyperactive temperaments. I am not entirely sure if it's ADHD because I have read somewhere that it's quite normal for some dogs to crave the attention of their masters. For example, the pug is one hyperactive breed! ^_^

Man what will they think of next. They do anything to explain hyper behavior anymore. sigh!!!! Why can't it be that the dog just has energy because maybe the dog is a working breed and is not working and has to find something to do with the energy that he or she has. But seriously I have never heard of an animal having ADHD..

I think that dogs that can have adhd. They are just crazy and some are crazier than others. I bet that dog marley had adhd. My dog is on the hyper side but I dont really think that he has adhd. He is a goofy little guy but is sweet none the less. I think he is really sweet but crazy. too much.too much
