Update on Dyna and the parvo

Well, it's 11:30AM here and we're still hanging in there. There were a couple of times last night when I didn't think Dyna was going to make it but I'm modifying the vet's instructions a little bit when it comes to the vomiting pill in order to give her body more support. I read online that it's for the stomach spasms that go along with vomiting. Last night a few hours after she had had her pill, which was prescribed twice a day or every 12 hours, she had a violent episode of vomiting and this time I saw blood. She was hours away from her next scheduled pill but I couldn't let that continue to happen or I knew I'd lose her. So, I cut one of the pills in half, ground it into powder in a tablespoon, added some of the electrolyte liquid and mixed it up. I sucked it up into the syringe, put more of the liquid into the spoon to mix with any residue and sucked that into the syringe, too. Then I gave it to her. She had started wanting water from her bowl badly late last night so after waiting a bit to be sure the medication had time to kick in, I let her have a drink. Until 6:00 this morning I was giving her some of the electrolyte liquid and letting her drink water a little bit at a time. We slept from 6:00 until 7:30 when I heard her vomit again but it wasn't much.
This morning she wanted to go out and when she did, she peed so that's a good sign. Someone gave me a link to the signs of dehydration this morning in my original discussion and Dyna isn't dehydrated so we're making progress...I think. This is Day 3. She's been outside twice...I think the second time she just wanted to get some air and to walk around a little bit but I didn't let her do much.
Also, this morning I went to the store and bought unflavored Pedialyte. Dyna doesn't like it but, since she wants to drink water from her bowl, I can get her to drink some by using two bowls and taking the plain water away after only a few laps. We're doing a little bit at a time, waiting in between, then doing some more. She's still vomiting off and on but it's not much...except for about an hour ago when she seemed so thirsty that I let her drink too much water and she drank it too fast. I learned my lesson about that!
My daughter's fiance took their very young pit bull puppy to the vet first thing this morning and she tested negative for parvo and for worms. She received her vaccine but the vet (same one I saw yesterday) told them to keep both of their dogs away from my property until Dyna is recovered and I've treated the yard.
So, that's the news for now. I'm going to give her the antibiotic a little bit early and will be staying home with her all day today. Thanks for all the support everyone. It's really helped!

Thank you kawalnarang. I know being treated at home instead of at the vet's has been helping her a lot. I've been talking to her and petting her to help keep her relaxed. I think that's been helping her to keep the liquids in.

I'm glad she appears to be getting better! Poor thing, I feel so badly for her. Would she eat popsicles? They make flavored ones from pedialyte for kids and if you can get her to eat some it should be easier on the stomach than the water.

I made a couple of pedialyte ice cubes earlier but she didn't fall for it. She just KNOWS it's not regular water and, if it's not, she's not interested. So, I'm still using the syringe to give her small doses (about an ounce) of the canine electrolyte stuff in between small drinks of water.

Thanks sunnflr! I do see a little bit of improvement today so I'm hoping this trend continues. I've never watched a clock so much in my life but, since keeping Dyna hydrated is so vital for her recovery, we're sticking to a schedule of small amounts often.

It sounds like good progress! I am hopeful for you! Peeing is a good sign as that means the kidneys are working! Keep up the good work, but get some well needed sleep. I am hoping you have an Easter that is joyful my friend!

Thanks Barbietre! I was very happy to see her pee today, and she went three times so not only are her kidneys working (which I had been worried about) but I've been able to keep her hydrated enough that she has extra fluid to send to her kidneys.
You know, I forgot all about Easter until a friend of mine from up north mentioned it on the phone today. We normally have my daughter and the grandkids over but it doesn't look like that's going to happen this year. They have a very young pit bull puppy who they took to the vet today for her vaccination but I still need to limit their access to my house until I get it decontaminated so they don't carry the virus over there. Unfortunately, the interior design of my house is very open and it wasn't possible to confine Dyna in the kitchen and I wasn't going to keep her locked in one of the bathrooms so she's vomited on my carpeting a couple of times and once on the couch dispite my best efforts to keep old towels and sheets under her at all times. It seems that the only way to kill the virus is with a bleach and water solution so, unless I can find a good alternative, I'm going to have to risk using it. My dark blue carpet and hunter green furniture might not look the same afterwards.

Hey spalladino~I am still praying for Dyna and keeping my
fingers crossed that she can make it through this! She sounds
like quite the little fighter so I think she can. I am glad
that she is trying so hard. It just breaks my heart to hear
what she is going through. I hope that she will get better
and stronger every day. You are doing everything that you
can and she sounds like she is responding pretty well to
the treatments. Please keep us posted.

Hi Opal! Thanks for the good thoughts. Dyna seems a little better tonight so maybe I'll let us get a few hours of sleep. She's asleep right now as a matter of fact but I want to get another dose of the electrolytes in her soon. She's been drinking water, too, and keeping it down for the most part but I only let her have a little bit at a time. I'll definitely keep you posted!

Thank you so much for the update. You are such a great mum to Dyna and she is so lucky she has you; you're doing so much for her and I am still praying that it will all be ok. Poor Dyna how awful feeling so sick! It sounds like there is an improvement and she's not vomiting as much and that's got to be a good sign.
Hang in there spalladino you're doing great! Love and prayers to you...

Thank you Paula. She does seem to be improving and I'm hoping that tomorrow she will be feeling even better. She looks so sad and miserable but she's up and around a little bit which is a huge improvement from yesterday.
