How far do you commute, or do you?

I commuted thirteen miles one way for three years. I have had longer commutes as well. I drove in a car. Now I live three miles from my job. I love that. My commutes were not too bad if the weather was moderate, but I hated it in snow, rain or extreme heat. I did not like the extra time required away from home, either. How do you feel about commuting?

I have to drive from client to client. This isn't a commute for me. I enjoy driving when the sun is shining. The longest drive is about 10 miles to one client if I am leaving from my house. I am glad that I don't have long drives to get to work. Makes me wonder how people actually do this on a day to day basis. I would have better things to do with my time.

That is how I always felt. Although I liked the sunrise, I did not like always feeling in a rush. I think the time between clients is probably a good regrouping time.

I commute from the apt. to the pool. 110 steps, such a wonderful departure from before. I used to drive about 30 minutes to work when I worked downtown, I hated it too. I used to write a blog about it, (long before bloggins was cool) It was a good release of energy. Maybe you should give it a try.

How have you managed to give up the commute? Is there a secret to not going to work, or working near the apartment and pool.

My commute is 17.5 miles each way. This is probably the 2nd longest commute I ever had... The shortest commute I had was across the parking lot of the apartment complex I lived it - that one was nice!

Uh, no... I have an Xterra - 18 mpg. Last year I averaged $400/month in gas. We actually went looking for an economy car but the new car payment along with the expected gas "savings" was going to be more than $400 so we weren't going to be any better off.
BUT, for this area, 17.5 miles is a very short commute. If I worked in DC, which is only about that far, my commute would take HOURS - even on the metro. Same if I worked in Baltimore - we're smack dab in the middle of the two. It's not uncommon for people around here to drive 50+ miles ONE WAY to work.

Hello Sweets
I commuted for many years...
One job was over a hour's drive away
another was about 45 minutes and another was
2 hours. Where I live with what I do I always drove long distance.
Then there was the weather!!!
Here in the Adirondack Mountains our weather
is something to be awed when the snow flies!
The ice storms and sometimes we get dumped with
2-3 feet of snow at one time...I always had a 4 wheel drive
and would turn up the radio..put the crash helmet on..
and just go!
I'm thrilled that I don't have to anymore.

Yes, if the weather turns bad, even though I go in to work, we keep the clients in their own homes instead of day services. I like knowing that they are safe.

When I worked away from home, I commuted in my car about 25 miles each way. My husband commuted 38 miles one way for years! My daughter commuted 35 miles each way for 18 years.Thank the Lord, she got a job 5 miles from home last year! She loves it and said other day, when she went to town to the DR, now she knows why she doesn't miss the Interstate every day.

That is like a pay raise right there. More time, less gas.
I am happy for her. It really improves the quality of life when you get rid of unneeded stresses.

My husband and I, I would consider quite Lucky. We do semi commute to work, but it is only about 10 mins one way for him to go to work, and then 10 mins for me the other direction to get to work which is quite nice for sure. I do know of people especially since jobs are harder to get who are commuting over an hr. around here just to be employed. But it is nice Gas wise to live closer to where you work for sure.

Congratulations on having a short commute. Imagine how much time that saves! I have never had a commute that short except now when we are retired and no longer have any kind of commute at all. The closest one I had was through town though, and took longer than a much further one in the open country. I had a stick shift car at the time and had to change gears 115 times each way for four years! After that I bought an automatic.

Oh, wow, that sounds like my first year of driving special ed bus. I had eight railroad tracks to cross on one trip across town. I do not know many people other than me who would keep count of things like that. I think I am looking forward to being retired, but it will be awhile.

I commute 25 miles one way for one job, 17 for another, and depending on which school building for my local school district, 10 miles for one, 8 for another, and around the corner (about 9/10 or 11/10 mile-somewhere in there) for the other. One day it was sooo warm all day and clear weather report, so I walked to the school and back.

I used to do about 25 miles each way every day. I drove it for years, then realised it was on a direct train line from really close to my house!
Now I can get to 'work' in a couple of minutes if I drive or 15 if I walk. When we finally finish our house I'll just have to roll out of bed!

I really think my school is only about 5 miles away from my house. If I had a car, becausde people have driven me there before, it would be a 20-15 minute drive one way. I have to take two buses. So, on a good day, including waiting for both buses, it's about an hour to get there. On a bad day of traffic or weather, it can take 2 hours. I don't like to commute, but I would commute for a job or for a job if the pay was high. Hwever, I doubt I'll take the bus when I work. When I start a steady teaching job, I plan to buy a used car.

Public transportation has its good and bad points. I would not enjoy having to ride a bus for so long. You are really dedicated to going to school.

Hi GardenGerty, back in England I used to commute each day, a relatively small distance of about 8 miles. Using a car was not an option as the traffic into the city was always at a perpetual standstill and it would have been quicker to walk. So I used the train daily which was always packed to bursting, horrid in the heat and constantly delayed, the excuses were endless, wrong sort of leaves on the line, snow on the line, body on the line. Every morning the commuters collectively sighed as the tannoy announced 'We are sorry to announce'. I'm glad I don't do it anymore.

I used to study at a college around 60 kilometers away from my house and commuted from here to there daily. I have to switch two buses before I reached it. It was tiring, not to mention cost money and time too. Then I worked in a company near the college, I continued to commute before I rented a house nearby the area. Now, I my workplace only around 15 minutes away from my house.

I think that would be a lot to commute every day. I am glad that you got to move close to where you were working. It makes a big difference in attitude and earnings.

I work at home, and I use a laptop, so I don't even have to get out of bed, if I don't want to. If my laptop is malfunctioning, then I can commute to the living room where I can borrow my husband's PC, or I can get on a bus and go about a mile to the resource centre at the mall, where I sometimes use the fax machine.

I drive about 60km every day (round trip is just about 80 miles) I dont mind the drive - actually like it as it gives me alone time and me time. But i dont like the extra time it takes to get there that im taking away from time to do other things.

So far I remember to commute at least more than 6 hours when I go to nearby city to buy wholesale items needed from my family store. I hate commuting now days as i always suffer from vertigo or nausea and sometimes vomit. I can only have calm travel when I take anti-vertigo medicines. My everyday commute from my house to the downtown area is only for 30 minutes then returning again is 60 minutes. I am so lucky that I do not need to travel as I look after the family store and do part time job doing freelance encoding, photography and online. Like you, I hate raining and if their is floods it wet my shoes and socks. Also, I am prone to cold and flu. I like fair weather where I can have fun activities.

I am the wife.
