Roomy Or Compact...

Recently I’ve been watching a lot of How Clean in your House and I’ve noticed something. A lot of the homes that they show in the UK area are very small and compact. There’s not much extra space. I’m wondering if that’s just how the houses are built there, if it’s b/c there are too many ppl living there or if there’s some other reason.
Here in the US most houses are pretty roomy. There are small ones and even efficiencies but most homes boast having big rooms and lots of space. Even our apartment is roomy and spread out.
Is your home roomy or compact? Which type of home is more common in your area? Do you notice a difference in the types of homes in your area and other places in the world?

I live in a very old town and most of the houses are very old, too. They are huge and roomy, from "Prairie Box" styles like mine to old Victorian treasures. I have a nice basement, an attic, an upstairs and a downstairs. I like the roominess, especially since I got rid of so much junk when I moved here!

Very neat link Dragon. My inlaws are absolute minimalists they'd love it if it was handicap accessable ;)

That got me thinking--have you seen any of those really tiny houses that some people are getting now? They're the bare minimum for space but they're cheap to buy, heat and cool. Here they are:

I love that show. After watching an eposode, I feel the need to get myself up and clean something. Some of those homes are horrendous. How can anyone live like that?
We have much smaller rooms here in Israel than in the States. When I built my house, I had my bedrooms made at normal American kids room size. People say they are huge, but I think they are really small. It's all relative. I would have had them made 2X the size if I had the money. But all in all, I have much more room than the studio apartment I lived in for 10 years in San Francisco.

I wouldn't let the camera crews into my house if it looked like any of those. I'd die of embarrassment.

My house is a victorian and is roomy, not compact. I see most places around here as pretty roomy. I wonder if compact is easier to keep clean? Perhaps places with small compact homes have to have more land to support the people and cannot spent their land on large homes.

I don't know...I think it's easier to clean if everything is organized and things have places to be put, regardless of size. A lot of problems come up when ppl have things just stacked, piled and tossed.

We have a three bedroom home, but there are hardly any shelve built other then above the closets and no place to put anything. Our bedrooms are small. We do have a master bedroom but it is a small master bedroom. The old houses had shelves and book cases built into the walls, but ours never had any. So we put our stuff in our dresser drawers, and on top of the closet shelves. It is no wonder the houses in the UK are messy. I think that they were once stately homes that were divided into smaller apartments or they were cottages for the laborers that were turned into regular houses, and if you were a laborer then, you did not need much since you had hardly anything anyway.
But once they fixed up these houses and they were no longer for poor people or renters, they did not realize that the people had more stuff and needed places to store them.
We have a variety of homes in our neighborhood, going from two or three storey large split levels to two bedroom starter homes.

Hi twoey, that program is brilliant. Our homes are small and compact we don't have huge rooms like you do. My kitchen is like a small hallway-tiny- my front room is open-plan and is a dinet and living room in one so that is a little bigger, the bedrooms are medium size so in all the house is small but not as small as some people's....hugs littleowl

Our his is big and roomy also, in fact I think its too big for just two people, its hard to clean and takes a long time...haha. Most of the homes in my area are the same, big and roomy, we do have some appt. buildings and I think those aren't all that small either. I haven't been to too many different places, so I don't know what kind of homes are in other areas.

I've noticed the same thing in watching that show. I love it. My home is roomy compared to some. It's just 1650 square feet with an open floor plan that I'm sure helps tremendously with the roominess.

Our house is very small it's only 1000 sq ft. It wasn't too bad when it was just the two of us and we thought we could add another bathroom & finish the basement (we've found out otherwise that we can't & the previous owner tried with a 2nd potty & failed) but now we've got kids it seems so cramped with everything we have.
Most houses in our lil subdivision are smaller like ours. I don't think most houses are really huge around here maybe 1500 ft is on the bigger side of the older homes. Otherwise there are homes that are over 2000 ft but they are newer homes and way way out of our price range. I"m glad to say I'm a home owner, but I was hoping our starer would be just that a starter & we've been here 7yrs and I don't think we are going anywhere anytime soon.

We live in a cape with a full basement. By some standards it is small, but the smallest room (besides the bathroom) is 9x12. We have 3 br, full dr, lr, big eat in kitchen and the basement is full size, so I guess there is more room than I care to admit. We have lived here 35 years, and our sons are grown and out, but my youngest uses his old bedroom as storage as his home (a Levit) has no basement. And we have a decent sized back yard.
By local standards, it is an average cape. Home sizes and style here are all over the place. But my house is bursting with stuff. We had a leak in the basement and are in the midst of throwing away lots of things that have been down there way to long to be of use. It seems no matter how big or small everyone's home is, they manage to fill it up.

My house has larger rooms, but not much space to store or organize things. The rooms are also situated so that organizing is a bit difficult. The closets that we have are built so that we cannot add shelving to create more storage, and some are small, so there is not much room to begin with. My kids' bedrooms are good sized for them, but my husband and I have a very small bedroom, and a tiny closet.
In this area, we have both large and small houses, depending on which part of town you are in. This used to be a military town, so many houses are small and have exactly the same layout. We have some older, huge houses that were built in the early 1930s, and some huge ones that are very new. I think that we have a nice balance of both large roomy houses and smaller compact houses.

My home is quite large, of course it is a 4 bedroom 2 bath home, but it is still roomy and well layed out. We have 3 central hallways, 1 downstairs, the stairway and the upstairs hall. This is where I display all of my pictures. We have a living room and a family room. The closets are all walk in. So I guess we are really lucky.

But even at that it was pretty roomy we only had to move the tv every night.
Bit I do have to say here in the states most places are big and roomy even the motel rooms we have lived in
Now I wouldnt want to try to live in a cold water flat in New York City.
adn from what I hear from a friend in England they do have small apartments! or flat what ever ya want to call it.

In Britain, older (19 th century) houses tend to have bigger rooms than modern houses but as they get newer, they get smaller. Land is at a premium and builders try to get as many homes onto a bit of land as they can decently get away with and of course, the more rabbit hutches they build, the more profit they make.
That's one of the things that I like about America - plenty of space - unless you live in one of the big conurbations of course.

I have noticed on House Hunter International (HGTV) that the apartments and houses shown are small overseas. Now my apartment isn't big, and people with less money don't have huge places, but even my apartment had more room in the bathroom, and the closets. The apartments and houses abroad seemed really cramped. The people who are buying have plenty of money on the show, so seeing what they can get with the same amount of money they spent living in America is shocking. The places just aren't that comfortable looking.

Hi twoey68...I live in Canada so our housing is the same as yours. HOmes and apts come in all shapes and sizes but for the most part, are not cramped. New construction homes are much bigger than some older ones depending.
I too was watching a show today but it was a couple buying a condo in paris. I couldnt beleive how crowded and cramped the spaces were and how expensive. I would never pay that much money to live in a shoebox. I like to have room. There is just hubby and I at home now but we still are living in a 2 bedroom condo thats pretty large and on the weekend, are moving to a house. I like my space.

I think they are built small becase of the popualtion desity and for the best energy consution. that is easer to heat in the winter time, a smaller house is earser to heat.
