What to do about Extremists?

United States

Here in the US we are trying to solve the dilema about what to do with extremists such as the Taliban or al-queda. Other countries from Great Britain to Indonesia are facing similar problems and challenges. My two qiestions, for anyone who considers the issue... 1. Is your country doing enough to address extremists who threaten the peace? 2. What more needs to be done, would you say? There you are... what would YOU say?

I don't think that the United States is doing enough to keep the extremists under control, but then again, I can't really think of a country that is. I think the problem with so many people being all "oh don't step on this guy's rights and make sure we don't call people by politically incorrect names" etc. is that they'll let things slide like this. I think religious groups need to be monitored somehow. A lot can go on in meetings with a lot of people behind closed doors. There needs to be some restriction on what religions can do. If part of the religious faction decides that killing people gets them a bunch of virgins, then those people need to be closely watched and maybe even considered mentally ill so that they cannot buy weapons (although that won't stop them from illegally buying weapons).

Ah yes, lets start monitoring mosques and give extremists more fuel for the fire.

I didn't say the religious people had to know about all the monitoring (there could still be some covert monitoring, but there could also be some things like records that all groups were required to keep and every so often a monitor would come in (even if the group already had a covert monitor person)). It wouldn't be just mosques either, I am not biased about religion. Christians, Hindus, etc. can all be monitored as well. Truthfully there might be more Christian extremists than there are Muslim extremists anyway. You never know. I'm also thinking about cases in the past with the Catholic Church, where priests were only held to their religious law rather than the state's laws as well. Practices like that definitely need to be stopped. Everyone should be accountable to the laws of wherever they're practicing their religion. And when people get away with stuff like killing endangered species because their religion said they could, that's going too far. I could come up with a religion that says it is mandatory for all stupid people to be neutered, but people aren't going to go for that. So why should the others be allowed, just because they've been around for so long?

Until the rules are made strict these kinda things will never recede. A proper committee has to be formed and peace talks should be held with the groups. Well Taliban and Al-queda are run by people who are good at brainwashing their subordinates and other militants. I really don't know that they gain out of killing people. If your a human being and if u find happiness in killing another human for no reason at all then there`s something wrong with you. Secret operations has to be carried out from all parts of the world and these extremists groups has to be abolished. The whole world has to unite at least for this cause. These things are really a very big overhead in building a nation. The whole world knows which country is aiding these groups. The only thing thats disrupting them from taking action is that they have nuclear weapons. You people know which country i mean. My country although it is good at safe guarding the people a recent attack turned out to be very brutal. Extremists sneaked in and carried out the attack. Its really disheartening to see fellow citizens dying. My final word is "If u can beat them; join them and destroy them" slight change to the normal saying :)

What do you mean by extremists? Do you mean terrorists or anyone who will use violence to gain their ends or anyone who belongs to a certain religion and will defend the practice of their faith even though the government was against them. In other words, would you have called the Jews in Warsaw who fought the Nazis to keep from going into the Concentration Camp as Extremists? Would you call Christians who decided to fight the politically correct same gender crowd who did not want them to condemn their same gender s*x preferences Extremists? Would you call the Homosexuals who decided to go and attack churches and people who said they were wrong, extremists? In other words, does it depend on what you believe in or could it be that anyone who uses violence to gain their ends? I would have felt much better if you had used the term terrorists. That leaves no doubt about their violent intentions.

That's the problems with some of the "buzzwords" that are used so loosely these days. The most simplified way of explaining it to my way of thinking is to say that while ALL "terrorists" are most certainly "extremists" in one way or another but all "extremists" are NOT "terrorists". Annie

Extremism sure is a big dilemma. Because extremists are transnational groups and individuals, with a strong (and false) religious ideological base, violence, occupation, and torture is one of the WORST ways to combat extremism. Unlike national forces, extremists have no limit to where they can reach, and the more they are destroyed, the more people join them. Having the intelligence to stop attacks is a great tool. But the only true way to fight extremism is through comprehensive measures of nonviolence, peace, reconciliation, hope, and social justice. As I see it, there are two main reasons why people turn to extremism: present conflicts in the world with Muslim nations and deteriorated economic hope of a better life for the future. There will always be extremists looking for followers, but the key is to get people to stop buying into their lies.

The simple thing to do is as follows. If you know they are out there, and no where they are, the simplest thing is to freeze bank accounts of suspicious and known terrorist organisations. Governments around the world know surely who these groups are and where they are hiding not just themselves, but there money supply. Instead of fighting wars and diplomatic wars, the way to hurt them is from there pockets and from there arms supplies. So arms dealers around the world should be more closely scrutinised.
