It is super delicious. Now is the time of year to be collecting your stinging nettle tops. Years ago I knew couple who lived on a sail boat. We were out enjoying the nature together one day. Upon returning to the boat, the woman whipped up this fantastic Cream of Stinging Nettle Soup. It was magnificent. I have no recipe nor could I even begin to say how it was made. All I remember for sure is that it was delicious. I would love to experience this again. How about you? Have you ever used stinging nettles in cooking or ate something with them as an ingredient? If so, what was it and how did you like it?

I have never had stinging nettle soup but have cooked them as greens. They are very good for you, full of vitamins and minerals. I washed mine, and sauted them up with a little oil, chopped onion and garlic. Added salt and pepper to taste, they were really good.

Hi Ambiepam, we have tonnes of stinging nettles here. a huge abundance so making soup is a great idea. If you ever come to the Westcoast, come in late spring, gather some stinging nettles 9wear gloves0 and make yourself a nice pot of soup. I am pretty sure the base is like a cream sauce with added cream or milk. Nettles and a few gentle spices. I never made made it myself and never got the recipe. After having looked it up, I found a recipe: http://localfoods.about.com/od/spring/r/NettleSoup.htm I would of guessed that the soup I had was made with cream as it was a cream soup. It is really very good. Here is another one that looks quite interesting. In fact I may try this one myself: http://www.natureskills.com/nettle_soup.html Thanks for your response.

This is such an interesting post mainly because I have developed a very real interest lately in learning how to cook. I had no idea you could make a soup out of stinging nettles! I thought they were nothing but hazardous for us, but to hear that people can actually use them as an ingredient is simply fascinating! It's also great to hear that you found it to be very tasty.

This is an interesting idea but not sure if the nettles growing abundantly here are the same, have they purple flowers on top? If they are the right ones I'm sure I could devise a soup recipe out of them, basically anything can go in a soup which is started off with greens and onions sweated together. Do you need to pull the thorny bits off before you start cooking?

Not joking, it is awesome angelsmummy, honest. You don't get stung at that point. It was very good and was no problem when eating it. Tasty too. Very delicious. Thank you for your response.
