Have you added any extras to your Sims?

I started playing Sims 2 and got interested in more styles of clothing etc. But when I downloaded them and installed them I cant see them in the choices when choosing clothes for them. I wondered if I was doing all right. Do you use these downloads and found them useful? Which are the best sites for such downloads?
