This shot shows my sweet corn bed I have this year. There is rouighly between 50 and 60 stalks gropwing. I started about halkf them indoors then transplanted them outside after the last frost. The squirrels will have a field day yet I should have plenty left as opposed to last years meager 12 plants. Do you plant more of anything than you really need like I did with my sweet corn? The one year we tried growing corn when we lived in the country it didn't turn out too well for us. We had a lot of stalks but not really much corn. I wonder if animals eat ours?!?!?! hahahaha Not sure why I never thought of that since we were after all in the country.

You'd notice if the critters ate it. They munch on it by ripping the covering away then eating the ears. That's why I plant extra each year. Let them enjoy the outer stal;ks as the inner ones get larger etc. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

Your question reminds me of my brother's first garden when he moved from Alaska to Colorado. He planted a whole row of squash, 3 or 4 seeds to a hill. I think he grew enough squash to feed the whole town.

Yes. We plant quite a bit of the food we really enjoy eating. It really is not a whole lot but it is more than we probably should plant. We love leaf lettuce, tomatoes and green onions. I like peppers too but we did not plant any this year.

yep. i did several sowings of different types of tomato seeds, and now , due to the sunshine and my cold frame, i am up to my ears in thriving tomatoes! its a pity you don't live nearer, GB I could pass some over to you !

I had 6 stalks coming up when I put them in the ground and now there is 1. I have to plant some more, I hear they fertilize each other and there has to be a few of them for you to get ears of corn. I'm glad you have such a good crop!

Yeah, we always ended up planting too many tomato and onion plants, the tomatoes we couldn't pick fast enough I don't know how many rotted on us, it was a shame, and the onions would start to seed if we didn't pick them in time..lol. My husband is like that tho, he'll say we're not going overboard this year, we're only planting a few plants of this and that, and he'll end up planting way more than we need. We always just took the extra vegetables to church and let people have them, they appreciated it, and it was good that nothing got wasted.
