Is There A Union Where You Work?

We have a Union where I work and this week they have been negotiating our contract. Our contract was up at midnight last night and they got an extension until Monday. Since the owners of the company I work for are in Great Britain they couldn't get the contract okay'd by them yesterday because of the time difference. We were told that if it is approved then we will be voting on the contract on Monday. I will be so happy when it is all over and we can actually know for sure what changes will be made in our contract. I know some will be good and some will be bad but I will just be so happy to have it done and over with. Do you have a union where you work? Do you always dread when your contract is being negotiated?

I am not a fan of unions. I have never worked for a company that has had one, but my boyfriend has worked for several. One place shut down because some of the workers were trying to get a union in. Another place that he worked (and made good money) had a union, when the contract was up for renewal they didn't get what they wanted. Because of this most of the worker chose to strike, now they have been on strike for 2 years with no prospect of returning to work. Luckily my boyfriend did get another job, but he is now making half of what he was previously.

I have always worked where my work was considered confidential, therefore, I was never in a union. I did work for a major retail chain once, and they were threatening to go on strike. My area was not involved since we were not unionized, but we had to go to work. We had a long meeting on how to approach the strikers when we were trying to get into work. It was pretty scary thinking that people were going to call you names, and throw things at you, just because they choose to strike and we were not. Thank goodness the strike never happened. r

I live in Arizona, in the United States. Arizona is considered a right to work state and generally frowns on unions so no, workers don't work with unions in this state.

I don't work for a union but I know some people that do. They hate when it's time for renegotiations. I hope that the negotiations will work in your favor and good luck :-)

We have unions all around the hospital where I work, and my department only has 2 pay steps (I know that's not the correct term, but people in unions will know what I mean haha). I am still kicking myself because we recently had re-elections in our union for the board members for our chapter, I COULD have made vice chair, but my coworker talked me out of it because 1)Our department is short staffed and 2)because of number 1, I would be making it worse, what with me having to travel all the time for meetings and such. So presently, I have no idea how any negotiations are going, but then, it might not matter what I worry about, because since our health care system integrated into a NEW system, (You may have heard of this, it's in Alberta, Canada, The Calgary Health Region is no longer that, but the region integrated into an all province helath region, renamed Alberta Health Services)and this New health region system, might cause out tiny union chapter to be wiped cleaned and then OUR chapter will be integrated into another exiting chapter. So whatever negotiations we create for whatever chapters, may be moot point after/IT we actually integrate into the other chapter.

hi, glad u finally work it out. I think there must be some sort of organizations that boast they serve for people, and I am 200% sure that they never help people indeed. Fact is, you can hardly learn about the services or duties of them, their location, working hours, I mean in my country. They are just so-called public servant that devour the flesh of public and suck people's blood. Lucky you, at least you can find someone to complain, to help figure it out.

I work at home right now. I used to work for a place that had a union though. I hate it when they re-negotiated because it always seemed to change for the worst. I dreaded it too.

I don't work union nor does my hubby. There are not alot of retailers in union shops, heaven knows they've tried to get into big corporations like Wal-mart w/o success. Other than the pay I haven't heard that there's much benefit to being in a union shop.

Well, over here, we have unions as well. The company which I'm currently working with do have an union as well. I will say that they did help us to fight for some benefits which we previously do not have, although it's not a lot. However, I seriously do not think that my current parent company will continue with the union contract after the end of 3 years (the contract was set-up a year ago, and they are "forced" to unionized the company if they will like to buy our company).

Ou union is teamster here. It has many types of union worker there. There usually locate at the same area most of the time. I never joined a union job. I always like a super high paying job with cutting a deal with my pocket.
