Do You Read A Book Starting With The Last Chapter First?

I have heard of people who actually do this. They always want to know what's going to happen before they finish. I'm not this way, myself. I like surprises.
I always start with the first chapter. I have been known to skim through the chapters before I finish, though. What about you? Do you start reading the last chapter first? Kathy.

No never. I never heard of such a thing. I read first page to the last page in that order. I can't see reading the last chapter that makes no sense to me. To me its like cheating.......!

That would be neat to own a bookstore, sorry it didn't do well. It is hard to get a buisness up, going & staying. Three in one buisness would probably be too many but i bet y'all had fun. U CAN BUY BOOKS SO CHEAP AT A YARD SALE & OUR LIBRARY HERE HAS A BIG BOOK SALE EVERY YEAR THAT U CAN FIND SOME REAL BARGAINS. I love to read but have not been reading as much since i started mylot. I LOVE MYSTERIES. HAVE A GREAT DAY.

Hi AntiqueLady! I always start with the first chapter, too. It's more fun if we don't know what's going to happen, isn't it? If I think a book is boring, I doubt that I finish reading it. I really enjoy reading, myself. I used to run a bookstore, as a matter of fact. I had it from 1984 to 1986. I enjoyed having my own business but we had to go out of business because we weren't doing any good. I say "we" because I had two other girls who worked with me part-time. We were also one of the first businesses to rent movies and vcrs in this area. Kathy.

Not the last chapter, so much. But, the last few pages. I like to know what I'm getting into and have a general idea of whether I'm going to be satisfied or disappointed.
And, it doesn't spoil it for me. Even if I know the ending, I don't know how they got there, which for me is just as interesting as what the ending is. And, also, there's the context that I won't fully understand until I read the rest.

yes your right some people always read the last chapter of the book. but me im always start in the chapter 1 so that i may not dismay if the ending is not good so that im still interested to read the whole book. its really exciting if u dont know whats in the end.

That's the way I do. I like to start with the first chapter, myself. Like I said, though, I like to skim through it sometimes, though. I agree with you. It's more exciting if you don't know what's going to happen. Thank you for responding and happy mylotting. Kathy.

I have some friends who are exactly like that. I am not one of them. When I start reading a book, I start from page one. But sometimes when it gets so exciting already in the middle, I look at the last 2 or 3 pages of the book. I just can't help it. :) Sometimes, I also skim through the pages, just like you.

I have some friends who do this because they like to see whats going to happen and then learn why or how it happened when they read the rest of the book. i myself can't stand reading the last chapter first because the whole point of reading a book is the surprise of how it ends.

I've done it but spoiled the book for myself. I have also peeked at the end while I was in the middle or near the end.
I have also not finished books because they were sooo good I didn't want them to end...

Thank you for responding. I would want to finish the book if I thought it was good. I have read books that kept me on the edge of my seat, too. Some books have been so good until I didn't want to put them down, lol
. Like I said in my discussion, I have done some skimming through the book. Happy mylotting. Kathy.

I do it with textbooks but not novels. Oftentimes I like to read the last chapter first to find out what would be the end result of the subject at hand before I start reading the first few chapter.

It seems like I remember doing this when I was in school. At the beginning of the year, I would kind of go through the textbook to see what it was about to get an over view of the subject, I guess. If it's a mystery I'm reading, I think it's more fun to start with the first chapter and not know what's going to happen. This makes it more exciting.Thank you for responding and happy mylotting. Kathy.

i sometimes like to look and see how the book ends but i don't that would ruin the ending i would just stop reading the book if i knew how it ended.that would be like some one telling you the ending of a movie you were watching

I agree. I think it would be like someone telling you the ending of a movie, too. I think it's more fun to start from chapter 1 and not know what's going to happen, especially if it's a mystery I'm reading. Thank you for responding and have a good night. Kathy.

I have a friend who used to do that! I thought it was kind of funny. Sometimes a few of us would be at a bookstore and not know if a book is good so she would skim the last chapter and say, yes or no. Personally, I start from the very first page and end with the last page! I need surprises too or else I can't read the book!

I know what you mean. It's funny you should mention a bookstore because I used to run one. I had it from 1984 to 1986. I enjoyed running my own business. However, we didn't do any good so we had to go out of business. I say "we" because I had two other girls working for me part-time. I would not do this. I read from the first page to the last. If I know what's going to happen, there's really no point in reading the book.
