internship or co-op? which is better?

Hi, I'm a college student in penn state, and I just finish my freshman year. It seems that many student like me are looking for the intern/co-op opportunities. My roommate said that the internship only provide learning experience, so he plan for co-op. I'm really confused about this two terms. Share your opinions
