I wish I was posting here about the amazing feat of having fruit flying in my house, at least I could call the news and be famous LOL, but...no, that's not it. I'm afraid I"m talking real flies. |The annoying insect kind. They're driving me crazy! I bought bananas on monday. |They were still a bit green so I let them for a few days. Now they are nice and yellow, and really tasty but the fruit flies...oh! the fruit flies..... There are millions of them. I covered the bananas and they're all hanging around on top of the cloth I used to cover the bananas. If I bother them, they decide to meet on the doors of the kitchen cabinets on top of the sink. I don't like to use bug spray, because I sometimes have the dishes drying in the sink, and I really hate the smell of those things. Who knows of a good homemade solution to get rid of those darn fruit flies? Just what I needed grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :)

Here's a little recipe I use for fruit flies and gnats. I absolutely hate those little buggers! I've used this homemade stuff for years and I think it works super. The friends I've given the recipe to too have said it works good. Take 2 Tablespoons of sugar, 1/2 cup of vinegar, and 1 teaspoon of dishsoap and gently mix them all together. Try and not create soap suds when you're mixing it up. Pour this mixture into some small containers and put the cups in the areas where the fruit flies, or gnats, are. Over the next 24 to 48 hours, you'd be amazed at how many have been drawn to the mixture, and then they drown in it. Be patient because it's not an instant type thing. I get a lot of the fruit flies in the warm weather, so I keep a low container of it hidden behind the basket where the fruit is sitting on my shelf.

Yes, I used a version of that and it's working. They're falling for it - literally LOL I think I will follow your lead and keep a bowl behind our fruit basket too, this way if it happens again I will have the secret weapon ready :) Thanks

FRuit flies are harmless. It´s a matter of not paying attention to them. If you let the fruit get too ripe they will give themselves a feast. They are called drosophilas and are not even unclean. Relax

Yes, I understand, but it really bothers me to have them all flying around. The bananas weren't even too ripe. They were actually a bit green in parts. In any case the vinegar bowls are helping:)

I got those ones too, but either those darn fruit flies are getting smarter and avoiding them, or they were old and the glue in it is not working as it should. I read in a site how to make our own with maple syrup and honey so I will give that a try as well.

My bananas did that too. It turned out a couple of them had split skins and that is what attracted the little beasties. I have a solution, but am not positive it will work. My brother says that putting the generic version of Listerine in a spray bottle and spraying it will repel mosquitoes and I had pretty good luck repelling flies with that same solution last year. It might work on the fruit flies as well. It is safe to have around food and dishes as well.

Yes, isn't it the world mysteries? I have fruit flies in my work, because people left fruits in our work kitchen. Tons of them. I hate it, some people believe that small fruit flies are very aggressive and they bite hard... So far I don't know about any other solution than hiding fruit away in dark place.

Oh, that reminds me of a joke that ends "fruit flies love a banana." We got an infestation of them several years ago when hubby left a banana in his backpack on the last day of a semester, just before we headed out on a 5-week vacation. When we got back all these little critters were buzzing around and we had no idea where they were coming from until the morning before classes resumed when I got out his backpack to make sure he had all the supplies necessary for starting a new term. My, my, my! I read about making little paper cones to put over glasses of white vinegar, but I have to say we didn't catch many of them that way. Those suckers out-breed the aforementioned RABBITS! Big time. Nasty critters. Good luck.
