What's the video format for mp4 digital players?

I'd like to put a video on my mp4 digital player but I it says wrong format.. I tried .flv, .mp4 but still it doesn't work. What could be the problem? What's the video format for mp4 players? My classmate put a video two years ago and it worked.. Kindly help me techies thanks.. =D
