Hostas are a shade loving plant. Their natural habitat is woodland so they don't mind a little sun but they thrive in shady, cool, moist places. The biggest pest is snails and slugs, though. It seems that a hosta is to snails as chocolate is to women! You can use slug pellets, of course, but probably the best protection is to mulch them with broken coconut shell, which snails hate.
