How often has something cost more than you thought?

My daughter went to her 1st dance class today. Cost for the 8 week course was $22. She wanted it badly enough she paid for 1/2. After her 1st class she cam home with a list of things she needs. Tights, ballet shoes, and Tap or Jazz shoes. The ballet shoes were $17. And the Tap shoes were $21 and change. So all told the class will cost like $65. I guess it's still worth it.

That's the way it seems to work out most of the time. I try to account for unexpected things like that when I figure the cost, but inevitably there are things that come up that I didn't expect, and would never have thought of. Recently I bought a new car for the first time from a dealer and I couldn't believe the charges that were added on. Dealer handling fee, DMV fee, tax, delivery charge (didn't make much sense since I picked it up), warranty. When all was said and done I ended up paying at least $1,000 more than I expected, and I added at least a thousand to cover incidentals that I wouldn't think of. I guess I underestimated the amount of charges a dealer can conjure up to make a little extra money.

I think I would have protested the "delivery fee". You picked it up. Unless it was a charge they were trying to cover for the stock that gets delivered. Which, from my way of thinking you still shouldn't be charged.

They tend to add the delivery charge saying it was delivered to them from manufacturer. I dont think its very fair because they have to have something on the lot to show off!

I go through this all of the time even though I try to find out the total upfront cost of everything before hand. There always seems to be more charges added on some way or some how. It is worth it but it puts you in a bind at times.

I find that often i take my car in for repairs and things get found that are wrong and my minor fix ends up costing me tons more than i budgeted for.

Things always seem to wind up costing more than I expected. I could give a story about my last vacation, but my wife would think I'm complaining. (I'm not.)

Oh my so many times I dont even care to remember .This normally happens becasue many stores and service providesr have hidden prices and mark ups .Consequently the price they quote is the basic price and to get the product you will need to pay so all of these hidden fees. Its so annoying

Hi Ersmommy1, it happened to me many times. That's why I make sure I keep my budget higher when I planned any purchases. Before, whenever I go for grocery shopping it never stays in budget. Now I carry a calculator! Funny but true!

Yeah my mom was going to let my sister become a dance pup that is what they call the dance class at the school and they dance at all the games. But when she realized the cost of the costume, shoes, hair accessories and cost of gas to go to each games and practice the cost was to great so sadly to her disappointment she wasn't able to join. That is why she was happy to join the one 2 months ago that the church had free..and she is really good at it and loves dancing but now my mom moved to a different town and county this week she cried that she won't be able to go back.

Hello ersmommy. I think that it is worth it if your daughter is keen on learning the dance. You know, to develop a kid's interest at a young age benefits her a lot. What's more, it is very elegant to dance. I have to say that I love to see kids dance. They look so cute and adorable to me. I love kids a lot. I wish your daughter to always enjoy her dancing class. Happy parenting, my dear friend.

Being the mother of 2 children I have discovered that nothing ever seems to cost what you are expecting it to cost. $65 for 8 weeks of dance class is really not that bad if you break it down. An added bonus is if she takes another dance class again soon the stuff might still fit her and it will be less expensive the second time.

That annoys me to no end! Did they tell you the total materials cost first? Usually not. You have to ask, but even then.. half the time they "miss" something. I am fighting this same battle with cable for my TV. Just to get 100 channels is ONLY $34.99. Okay, i can deal with that... BUT... $5 a month for a cable box per tv just so you can pull up those 100 channels. I have 2 tv so that adds $10 a month. Then a $5 monthly service maintenance fee... added to the monthly bill. Now we are at $50 a month! PLUS add state and fed and FCC fees, taxes and surcharges and another $10 a month is tacked on! So to have basic, minimum, no movie channels TV is $60 confounded dollars a month and I hardly ever watch TV anymore (nothing worth wasting my time on these days!) So from $35 to $60 in one breathe! This is just like that I Love Lucy episode called "Sales Resistance:"... Ricky was all over Lucy cause she bought everything any saleman presented to her! She lets this vacuum sales man come in... talk her into buying the "works" for only $6.95. Lucy thinks "the works" means the vaccum cleaner! But no.. it really was just "the works" as in "just the engine! THen he says "but you need this nice case to hold it all for only $10.95 and you need this hose so it can do its job and that is only $4.95 nad you need these extra part/nozzels to suck everything up and those are only $6.95...."

Will she have to buy a costume for the recital too? My daughter has been in dance for 3 years now. The first year it was $3 a class paid monthly, so December was only $6, but most other months were $12. The next year they decided to make it $12 a month, or $60 if paid all up front (runs from Oct to April). Then the costume at the end of the year costs around $35 This coming year they're asking for $100 and that is to cover the costume as well. Sometimes they sell used shoes to make it more affordable. I'm hoping her shoes from last year will still fit her this year. She's going to take tap for the first time this year, and I'll have to buy those regardless. So I'm hoping her jazz and ballet shoes still fit! Last year she did baton for the first time, and that one got me! The class was $40, and it was maybe a 12 week class. I didn't think $40 was too bad, but then we needed to pay $20 for a baton, and she had to have white sneakers and white shorts! Thankfully she did already have the sneakers, but it's hard to find white shorts in January!

Well, yes, university! It's all very well saying you pay for course fees and accommodation, but then you need to buy all of your books off you reading list, a tv, a tv licence, stuff for the kitchen.. not to mention clothes/food/drink whilst you're there! I feel completely and utterly unprepared for uni, I haven't saved up anything at all, even though it would have probably been a really good idea to do so, as a lot of my friends have had jobs and been saving for a while!
