SO you've heard of the 5 second rule?? I'm wondering... would you eat off your kitchen floor? I picked up a chocolate chip that fell and popped it in my mouth today... and wondered.... how many people feel comfortable enough to eat off their kitchen floors?

Depends on the foodstuff in question. As long as it doesn't have sort of sticky coating that would cause stuff to cling to it, I don't have a problem with it, especially since my kitchen floor does get cleaned fairly frequently. Our bodies are much better at fighting off germs than I think we give them credit for.

Hahaha...
It totally depends on the food. If it is chocolates - no way i am going to give up. When it comes to other food stuffs and also how desperately hungry i am, I would pick up or would not.
Nice discussion.

Chips are always safe, right?? I agree... never let a good chocolate stranded on the floor!

It depends on what part of the floor it falls on. The middle of my floor is usually pretty clean, but the area right up next to the cabinets tends to collect dust and stuff. If the food item rolls under there, it's a goner. If it lands in the middle of the kitchen and it's a dry item that won't get stuff stuck to it, I'll eat it. If it's a piece of fruit or vegetable I'll rinse it off and eat it.

It depends on 2 things for me. Firstly it depends on what I dropped, for example if I dropped a chip I would happily pick it up and eat it within 5 seconds. But then if I dropped a piece of bread and butter I wouldn't as in my experience it picks up more little bits of the floor.
Secondly what day of the week it is. Okay sounds strange but basically whilst my kitchen floor gets swept most days it gets washed on a Monday. So if I drop something on the floor on a Monday I am more likely to pick it up and eat it than if I dropped something on the floor on Thursday onwards.

Maybe the rule i heard is different, it was 3 second rule! haha....To be honest, i don't feel comfortable eating the things that drop in the kitchen floor. For the sake of our health. I will perferred to drop it.

I had a roommate that used to throw eveything on the floor and leave it there......... for a while... ewwwww... WE worked fast food and she was used to someone else cleaning up her "prep" work. It wasn't me. So... after that... I can't just plop stuff on the floor... but if something "jumps" out of my hand... totally different!

I'll eat something that fell on my floor, rinse it off if necessary. There are people who work in restaurants that follow the rule and I know it. I have seen it done. My daughter works in one right now and she talks about seeing it done. You never know where your food has been and what has been done to it.

I guess just eat it with the best thoughts in mind. I wouldn't serve anything I'm not willing to eat... I'm sure there are many in the food biz that go by the same rule. If it's too disgusting for me to eat... I'm tossin' it!

HAHA the 5 second rule is totally bogus. It picks up the same amount of germs if it lands on the floor or stays there for 5 seconds lol. I remeber people saying this when I was a kid about the 5 second rule. To me it just depends on how recently I washed my floors and how clean they are weather I will allow my kids or myself to pick something up off the floors and eat it. Really though I shouldnt allow them or myself to ever eat off the floor as my cat uses the litter box then walks all over the house with her paws spreading germs. So gross to think about.

I won't do that. It was dirty, I can't pick it up again and swallow it to my system. It just too dirty. I would definitely threw it away. I just can't eat something on the floor already.

I have used the 5 second rule before. However, it really depends on what it is that fell on the floor, and where on the floor it fell! I've gotten to the point now where I usually throw it away.
