Awake during Surgey, an Anesthesia Scandal?

What if the reason your hearing the stories of people going into surgery and coming out in horror claiming they were still aware of the surgery, were giving less Anesthesia then they should of gotten? Now that we know Anesthesia is addictive, that addiction even in the practice of Anesthesiology (espcially young practitioners) is common, are these doctors skimping their patients just to put more on the side for themselves? How awful, I know these victims are suffering from some serious Post Traumatic Stress. I wonder if this will be called into question and finally get the attention it needs..

This happened to me one time, but I could not move or speak to tell anyone I was awake!! Afterward, when I told the doctor, he went over my medical charts carefully. I was taking a medication that counter-acted the anesthesia to a certain extent and should have been more to assure I was asleep. He felt horrid, but it was all after the fact by then. Ack! Karen

Hello to both of you. I HAD told the doctor of all medications. It is mandatory on the form we all fill out before surgery. It was also listed in the forms my family doctor sent, as that is done in the US, since the surgeon is a specialist. It was his mistake. As I said, he admitted such and apologized profusely, but again, by then, it was after the fact. I do agree, one must always provide complete and accurate information, but even that is not an iron-clad guarantee that medical mistakes will not happen.

this is a pertinent issue revella. I wouldn't be surprise if doctors do that purposefully just to retain their job. But that would be a sad thing for the society. Anesthesiologists are in great demands for not only they are less in numbers but also a good professional is hard to be found.

That has always scared me. I have heard several stories where that has happened. I had never thought about the doctors skimping and keeping some for themselves. That sounds very possible.
