Her work ethic drives me up the wall

Theres a girl at work whose work ethic or lack of work ethic drives me crazy. She comes into work 10-15 min late every day. She reads a book, plays games online, tries to do my job instead of her own...anything but what shes being paid to do. She'll not bother to let us know ahead of time if shes taking a day off or has an appointment for an hour during the day..she just leaves or doesnt showup til when ever she feels like it. Today she left a message saying she wouldnt be in because she was going golfing. To me thats something you book a day off for and go you dont just...decide you arent going in. It really really bugs me when she does this mainly because i was taught you go in when you are scheduled unless you are VERY sick or you booked the days off. And you actually do your work at work. I admit I will come on mylot when i'm waiting on systems to complete but i dont not do my job to do personal things. Have you ever had a co-worker that does that? Would it bug you?

How does that rate in comparison with employees that are supposed to be in the field, but spend all day shopping? There are people who have no work ethics or an ounce of professionalism. When it comes to job cuts, they're the ones that management should cut loose. Maybe your fellow co-workers can join and sign her farewell card, letting management know the reasons why she should go? Would save the company some money minus her... or even better, share her pay amongst you and your co-workers... ^_^

Hey saundyl! Unfortunately I have had many co-workers like this and unfortuately they always got away with it and I never did! It would drive me insane! It was always ok for them to do whatever they wanted, but if I even so much as called in sick I would have hell to pay! I will never understand how some people can get away with this sort of work ethic or should I say non-work ethic! If I was the person who was the boss I would fire their azz on the spot! It just isn't fair to have one person who follows one set of rules and the others who have to follow another set! This was what happened to me in more than one job! It is also what caused me to almost have a break down too!

It isnt fair i agree. However i must say that knowing now how much this is irritating me more and more I'm so so glad that we decided against purchasing the business together back in January/February. She would have driven me even fruitier without ever having hope of her quitting or getting fired. Even now I'm still considering purchasing the business however I think even though she is my friend I would have to replace her with someone else. I'd feel bad about it but the work ethic thing really really does bug me. I actually have someone else in mind if i do decide to purchase it.

i think for one my boss is really really big on second and third and fourth chances (it took him about 10 chances with one guy to fire him and that was because he stole from the till that he finally was fired) and that he doesnt really pay attention to what is going on in the office these days.

Honestly the boss tends not to be around - he actually stopped "working" with the company about 6 months ago (he has a history of starting businesses getting them off the ground and loosing interest) and starting another business with webdesign with his brother and he does alot of commuting and online web meetings for it. So he more or less...doesnt really pay attention.
