old eyeshadow

I was cleaning my dressing room the other day and found some eyeshadows that a friend who sold Mary Kay had given me. They are at least 5 years old but have never been touched. They are open though, just to assess the color. Do you think they are safe or should I just trash them? If I haven't used them in 5 years, I never may. Opinions? I will go with the majority opinion in 7 days.

If they haven't been used, why not keep them? I have a few eye shadows that I've had for almost 30 years (colors that I don't normally wear), and once in a while I use one. Haven't had a problem, and occasionally those awful colors from the 70's com in handy...like for Halloween.

These colors are dark earth tones and even one is maroonish. I need someone I trust to help me put them on and see which are acceptable for my skin color and all.

I'd toss them, better to be safe then sorry...everything has a shelf life rather its open or not...I'd say 5 years is safe to say they are beyond their shelf life & expiration date.

I'd say they are fine to use. My mom sells Mary Kay and I've seen her use some stuff she forgot she had, but it was several years old.

I suppose the other question would be why haven't I used them even once? I think they are all darker colors than I am used to and comfortable with.

I do not really think things like that go bad where they would not be safe for you to use. I think you should keep them and try them out. You can throw them away if you do not like the result.

True, I should at least try the colors on before pitching them.

I think they are not safe and you should trash them. They could have bacteria that could do irreparable harm to your vision. Why take a chance? Here is a neat web page that talks about how long different cosmetics last: http://fashionmagdaily.com/website/health/makeup2.php

OK, so the consensus is 4-2 for keeping them.... I guess I will do a sisters day with my sister and nieces and try them out and see if any of them are suitable for us. The colors are dark and I am not holding out hope. No big loss if I do toss them, as they were free.

OK, I'm outnumbered, but I'll repeat what I said before, "Why take a chance with something as priceless as your eyesight?" http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/fabulous/beauty/285664/Blindness-and-boils-could-the-contents-of-your-beauty-bag-be-ruining-your-looks.html
