help me chose a dog!! please?

I wanna get my sister in law and brother a dog. They have a small child whose 9 in a half months old, so i want a small dog thats sweet and good with children but also easy to train. The dog doesnt have to be real small just medium sized like a beagel or whatever. Plz give me tips or information on the dog. I own two pitbulls and a chihuahua but i dont think their the best breed for a child their breed is a bit too rough.
