My son was coming home from town and called his wife and told her that he was bringing home some shrimp and could she make him a shrimp pasta as it has been so long since he ate one.
By the time he reached home in about 15 - 20 minutes she had everything ready. I felt quite dizzy watching her.
Penne pasta was cooked and drained and all her ingredients for the sauce ready and all this other bits and pieces chopped up. Evenly chopped too.
Everyone except me (allergic to shell fish) ate and said it was wonderful. I don't remember cooking with that speed when I was younger. I think that I am a slow cook now and was always a slow cook.
Do you cook fast with efficiency or are you a slow cook too?

It depends on what I am making and it depends on what kitchen I'm in...if I'm in my mom's kitchen I'm fast because it's bigger and a lot more counter space...now my kitchen in my apartment is small so I have to move things around etc...so yeah I'm slow in my own kitchen depending on how much I am cooking.

Yeha I hate how little counter space I have in my kitchen. I know that when my boyfriend and I move into a house I will definitely want a bigger kitchen with a lot of counter space lol.

My space is limited too. I hadn't thought of it being a hindrance but I think that you are so right.I also have to keep moving things around as I cook. Maybe this helps me to be so slow.

Do you mean that you need extra space to to cook?

For the last couple of years I basically nuke everything! LOL..but when I have company I like to take my time to make sure it's right! I have gotten to the point though lately that it's just a salad for supper....and that is so wrong! But winter is coming then I do enjoy cooking even more.....I can't eat shellfish either!

You know I had a lovely salad the other day. Apart from the usual greens and beans I topped it with hummus mixed with some tahini paste and used a plain french dressing of olive oil, garlic and vinegar with a touch of sugar. It was amazing. I am trying to eat more salads and have taken to trying different variations. It was filling too.

I cook rather fast, but I can't say for certain it's with efficiency. I don't think I'd be as precise as your DIL. I cannot chop things evenly, and I tend to make a mess as I go.

Her mother has a cake shop and they are all good cooks. They sell fried and baked chicken too so I think that she grew up learning to cook. She is very good. I am messy as well but if I have the time then I will wash up as I go along as I do not have a dishwashing machine

Wow, she moves like lightening! I think it really depends on what is being made and who's in the way when I'm making it. For instance, all parties were content a little while ago and I whipped up a pizza in about 15 minutes and threw it in the oven.
But, if we're making bread, rolls or cookies the kids always want to help and helpful hands aren't always so helpful. It talke about an hour to get bread going when I have help. Just putting the stuffing in deviled eggs can take a 1/2 hour when I have 'help".
Not that I mind, it's good practice for them in the kitchen, but I can throw stuff together quick if I've got the kitchen cleared of helping hands.

I can remember what it was like with kids helping! I had four of them around me but they all learnt to cook at a young age. They are good to. My daughter whips up a meal quickly but I just cannot do it. My son is a slow cook too. But it does taste so good when he cooks as he seasons everything perfectly.

Well, if it involves any kind of fish or seafood, the answer is slow. I guess I cook fairly quickly, but I'm not kidding, when I'm cooking fish or seafood it seems to take me forever. Too bad I don't have Oprah's personal chef. Hey, we could all lose weight if we had our own chefs!

do you know that I have not eaten carbohydrates for nearly three weeks and have only lost two pounds. Life is not fair (but then, no one ever promised that it would be. I so would like Oprah's chef too.

I don't know. Honestly I don't pay any mind to how long it takes to make a meal. i just know what my start times are so I know when to start cooking so the meal is done by the time hubby is up & when the kids are hungry. Especially this time of year I make faster meals when the weather is cool I have to consider baking times as well.

I can whip certain things together pretty quickly. But if you throw a new recipe at me, nope. Shrimp pasta sounds heavenly...

I am by no means a cook yet. I know how to cook a few things, and aren't practiced in them. I guess now I feel nervous cooking as before when I did cook it was mainly for myself as family either had ate something else, or just didn't want any. Maybe My food was only good to me?
. My fiance and I cook slow when we do cook. Usually it's sloppy joes, taco's, um... spaghetti. I guess those are faster dishes to make though and no real preparation aside from salads are required. For sloppy joe's, we usually just have chips... In any case... I guess I'm right along with you, a slow cooker. My grandmother and my fiance's mom can cook things faster, and with knowing just when to put something on a burner so everything will be done at the same time.

That's what I've been told! My mother in law told me that the other day, that and to always have the handles outside of the stove because she had to learn the hard way! 3rd degree burns! Youch! I know i've been told to keep the handles away from the front when there's kids around... but that's common sense!
What kind of foods did you first start cooking?

Funnily enough, I learnt to bake at about 11 years old but do not do much now. I was much older when I learnt to cook though. I never cooked at home so it must have been when I went to college. The first meal was pork chops in a gravy, with mashed potatoes and vegetables. I remember feeling overwhelmed trying to get it all together.
I cooked for my boyfriend (later became my husband) and he called the chops karate chops. I burst into tears and threw them out of the window! They landed on the pavement. Was he surprised!

You are just a little sweetie pie and you will have many more years to learn. When I first begun cooking it was difficult for me to learn when to put things on the burner to so that the meal ended up cooked at the same time. It will come with practice though.

when I lived on the farm with all of the children I used my slow cooker so much. It really helps. Just to be organised and use it. There are so many recipes online that everyone would enjoy. It is lovely knowing that when we were sleeping the next day's dinner was being cooked.

I can throw a meal together pretty quickly. Of course, that's if everything is not from scratch. Maybe only one of two homemade items. My husband has always worked odd hours and I start cooking near the time he calls to say he will be home. I don't LIKE to do it that way, however. But I HAVE had lots of practice.:)

I like more traditional meat and potatoe meals and when my husband worked odd hours it drove me up a wall. Always wanted a hot meal to come home too, but I'm not staying up till midnight just to fix it for him. For this reason I love the crockpot. I could throw things in there - even made soups in it and it keep it going till he got home. Saved a lot of arguements that way too - LOL.

No, I don't remember cooking quickly or just rustling up a good meal within a short time. I know that I used to use wide topped thermos flasks and put food in these for him when he came home late after shipping bananas. I am someone who has to plan I suppose. I don't do much cooking at present as the children all take turns so I usually go home to a meal that has already been cooked. It smelled so delicious - wisht hat I wasn't allergic to shell fiah

I believe I cooked pretty fast. This is also because I have been working in a commercial kitchen for almost 2 years now, thus all the chopping and slicing was a piece of cake for me. Although, one thing I have to worry about is that this made me not liking having other people helping me cooking, because I found them too slow or in the way. I know, I need to change this bad thinking. I have started to take it easy with this one, I let my sisters in the kitchen helping just a couple of nights ago! yay! One big thing I learn from working in the kitchen is we all have to be organised. When we do, we dont leave things behind, therefore, it will speed up the cooking process.

I like to cook slow most of the time. I have to cook fast sometimes though because of the schedule we have with working. I would rather cook slow and make sure it cooks the right way though.

I think being organised is probably the key. when I was cooking for the family and working I used my slow cooker so much in preparing meals. I like my food seasoned through.

I am definately a slow cook. I hate the task so much Blah
. my sister on the otherhand is like Miss Flash. She enjoys cooking more than anyone else in the family and really does the best at it. I admire her for that.
She does well too and is far more willing to try new stuff that I am. I just want to partake of some great home cooked meals as I hate junk food as much as I hate cooking.

I hate junk food too. I don't hate cooking but I like to plan what I am doing and take my time doing it. Hence, I don't cook much these days as there is a crowd at home and they take turns to do the cooking. All my family can cook.
