i didn't know this before but for women wearing trousers is illegal in sudan, with some brutal sentences for breaking this law. there's protesting going on about this, with the latest news being the police attacking protesters. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/aug/04/sudan-woman-trousers-court what would you do if this was your country - (if it is your country then this isn't a theoretical question), if you're a woman would you protest, wear trousers and risk the lashes or keep your head down? if you're a man would you protest?

Bring on the lashes, baby. I would mlm the hell out of it, too. I would tell five girls to wear trousers and tell them to tell five girls to wear trousers, and so forth. Teargas? They actually released teargas over wearing a pair of pants? Time to get with the times. Yet again, another example of what a waste of life religious beliefs lead to.

I really don't get it. When doing something, like lashing someone for wearing something, is there not an inherent feeling that that is just inhumane and wrong? Even if their respective god told them to do it?

This is a hard one because I live in the U.S. where I've had freedom all of my life and am used to being able to speak my mind and to demonstrate without fear of being harmed. I would have to say though, that in my heart of hearts, I would stand with my sisters and fight for our rights. I'm just not the type to keep my head down and my mouth shut.

the same with me - i can't know how being brought up in a very traditionally religious family would have affected me. i have always been strong minded and a rule breaker though so i think i'd be up protesting (i'm also not afraid of pain so the punishement wouldn't influence me although the social pressure might, don't know). incidently i'm on a course and the moment and one of my classmates is from sudan (actually the first person i've ever met from there). i don't know her that well (we've just started),interestingly in this context she covers her hair but wears trousers all the time and has an outrageous sense of humour.

Wearing pants by women is against the laws of Islam. You know? The religion of peace.

i'll have to ask someone or check that pisa but as plenty of muslim women here wear them i'm not sure that's right. looks like a (mis) interpretation to me.

They should make a tv show called, "When religion goes deadly wrong".

also think it's unlikely that all the protesters are agnostics and atheists. anyway take it you'd be up protesting?

Dear friend, This is really undigestable and moreover I could know that culture have a big roles everywhere but forcing it and hurting other's freedom is really some thing unbearable. I hope what happens if poor person is unable to dress well or may be if tourist go there wearing trousers. May be they have to be in US or other western places they could find much preys but beware they are far different they would really teach them a good topic.
