Can I Drink It?

My daughter is currently at university in North Carolina. She's been told that the water in her part of the state is "OK" to drink, but bottled water is preferable and "guaranteed" potable. It has never occurred to me that the US might be a problem country when it comes to acceptable drinking water. Can you drink the water that comes out of your taps?

not out of the tap straight, it has to be cold first sometimes Austin's water is somewhat wanting in taste, when the lake "flips" and it has a lake-ie scent and then you really don't even really want to drink it cold, but add a flavor to it.

it happens nearly every winter, when the top layer of water becomes colder than the lower levels and so it sinks and the warmer water below comes up - yuk!

I have a vision of seething mass of water now. Sounds like it needs a back doctor!

my former roommate and I had her mother living with us... she was complaining about the taste of the lake after it had "flipped" We were telling her about how it flipped and then I found an article in the National Geographic about an exploding lake - and showed her the pictures... of course, that was a different kind of "flip" that was probably in 1985 showing the 1984 lake flip... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limnic_eruption

I'm going to guess that they don't chlorinate their water. And so I suppose there exists the possibility of bacteria that her body isn't used to, but that the residents of NC can tolerate. I drink tap water here myself, but California ain't North Carolina...

Nope I guess that it is not. I don't know the problem down there. I do know the song though. A timely reminder!

there are some parts of the country that you can drink from the tap. there are deep wells all over the place, but not all of them are acceptable. we prefer though is bottled or one that we can get from the refilling station (not a gas station )

If there is any doubt then it makes sense to drink what you know to be safe Neil.

Hey p1key! I didn't know that the water was undrinkable in North Carolina! Yes, I can drink the tap water here in Yonkers, NY! In fact it tastes pretty good! It has been rated as one of the best tasting taps in NY! At least that's what the stupid tap tasting testers said! Personally, it does taste better than the next few cities up from me! I have tasted their tap water and can't drink it! Is there something wrong with the NC water or does it just not taste too good?

In London the water has passed through at least 5 other people they say. Maybe a little of each of them is passed into it! LOL. I don't know enough about NC water yet. But I will find out.

yes, I do drink the water that comes out of my taps. I think there is nothing wrong with it. I just have to boil it first to kill off any bad bacteria. Then I let it cool off so I can drink it. If there was a warning about our tap water being bad on the Local News. Then I wouldn't drink it and just buy bottled water.

We filter our tap water Gabs. That does make a difference. Makes it softer too.

We can drink the water that comes from the faucet but I really do not recommend it. We have alot of hard water in our area and I do not trust how clean or pure it is. They send us reports on the water purification in our area and it does not seem to be all that clean to me.

If you doubt it then it's best not to drink it Steph. Boil it or buy bottled water.

The water down here is fine to drink but I'm not a huge fan of the tap water so I use a water purifier. Once in a while we'll have a boil water order if a line breaks somewhere and the water is contaminated or something like that...also if we get hit with a hurricane we usually have a boil water order or we can't even use our water...but those problems are rare.

She's using a water filter now. That will make it fine.

Hi p1ke, When I went to the states it was ok to drink the tap water, but I was in the South ohio Sotuh Dakota, Kansas and a few other states, the only place I ever had to buy water was in Africa as it was advised not to drink tap water there for health reasons, but as said I have never heard that it is advisable in the States unless things have changed out there...hugs LoLo

Yes, we can drink our well water. It is high in iron and sulphur, but potable. It stains the fixtures somewhat and the sulphur smells in the warm water, but I am told that sulphur and iron are actually good for you. I am told there will be a water shortage soon. Canada has the highest % of drinkable water and we have yet to preserve our most valuable resource. I have heard that some countries have passed laws making clean drinking water a fundamental right. I have also heard that many countries have been selling their water, as well. What is this world coming to? Without clean drinking water, there is no life. We cannot drink money to survive.

I think that we are one of those countries Annie. There's nowhere that I know of that has undrinkable water. It might not always taste good, but it is clean. I agree with you entirely. There has to be clean water.

Some people are ok with our water out of the tap, but, I don't like. Anybody that says water doesn't have a taste has really bad taste buds. I will drink it, if it is filtered.

Yes, in the area where I live, the water company is very strict about their water standards and how many pollutants are allowed. The water here is exceptionally clean, so I can drink water out of my tap without getting sick or anything.

I used to drink the tao water here in Cairo for the first year or so, but now my Wife and I drink bottled water. The tap water's quite heavily cholrinated, so it's safe and all, but it doesn't really taste so good and there seems to be quite a high number of kidney stone cases here because of silt in the water. Back in Australia, the tap water's perfectly OK to drink too and I think the only place where I absolutely refused to drink the tap water was when I lived in Mumbai, but even there I drank it every now and then without even realising it I'm sure! Thankfully good quality bottled water is only about 40c US for 1.5 litres here otherwise it could become quite expensive!

I'd worry about crocodiles in that silt too James. They're buggers to get back in the tap! LOL. I wouldn't drink the water in India either. In Nepal I only drank bottled water and never suffered any problems. The bottles are hard to pass afterwards though!

Raises hand and waves it around to attract the attention of the OP who is not looking this way, instead, thoughtlessly focusing his attention of those Yankees. Our water is not very nice, probably because it's bore water which means it's coming from an underground source via a bore. There is a white crustiness that develops around the openings where the water exits and the bath enamel deteriorates over time. My lovely pink tub has a constant tide mark with the pink faded below the line. I shudder to think what the salts and minerals are doing to my guts. It kills plants over time. Luckily, I have rainwater tanks.

Every city has water treatment plants that clean and filter the drinking water so there shouldn't be a problem with it. Depending on the area of the country, water can taste horrible or very good. When I was in the Southwest the water was so awful that I couldn't stand the taste of it. Now I'm in the Midwest the water is great tasting. I think that people are referring more to taste than whether the water is potable. And remember, most of the United States has settled into a frenzy of germophobia and is afraid even to drink the water. If your daughter likes the taste of the water or even can tolerate it, advise her that it's safe to drink. Bottled water is so expensive and it usually is just bottled and mostly untreated tap water!

I suspect that's exactly it. She's a milk fiend anyway. She'll drink cold milk until the cows come home! LOL. Or put it in her tea which means that the water is boiled anyway.

hi pikey hatley here well here in Garden Grove the water is drinkable but has a slight chlorine flavor to it so I usually' put some ice cubes in mine. Iguess some states may have some problems.I was spoiled as a kid for we drank artesn well water which had no chemicals in it and didnt taste odd.it tasted a lot like spring water, and I dont mean the bottled kind.I suppose its to be expected that water will get contaminated as the big cities spew out all that smog which undoubtedly would get into the water system. Tustin where I used to live for ages has waTer that tastes of chlorine for sure it is safe to drink but definitely not too tasty.Where I grew up as a kid we lived near the Black Hills aNd there were lots of creeks in the hills. boy was that waTer so good, no junk in it just clean faSt moving mountain water.cold and tasteless the way good water should be.I have never been down south in the southern states like North Carolina so have no idea how their water stacks up.It is a shame that all our factories spew out junk that pollutes our air , our drinking water, surely they should be able to fix that problem or dont they care?

In some cities the water we drink passes through several other people first Hatley. I have tasted fresh virgin water too. It's almost indescribable. Sweet, cold and refreshing.

hi p1kef1sh, I live in new delhi India and no none of us in Delhi would ever trust Delhi Jal Board ( the company which supply water to our taps ) to give us drinkable water. I am sure if you check the water properly then it would be found not fit for human consumption. So what we do is we use water filters ( as bottled water would be quite costly if we use it for every our eating need, drinking and in making food. The filtered water is as good as bottled water .
