Yes, Yugasini, if we people travel to a foreign place or even far enough from our own home in our country, we cannot know by instinct how to get back home. We need maps or directions. I do believe that the "homing instinct" is a gift that God gave the birds and many other animals. It is built into them by God to know how to get back, always, to their home place, no matter how far they travel from it. Karen

ya they are gifted with that talent and its because they have internal compass in their brain which always guides the directions in which they have to fly. but one have to appreciate that they have got real good memory. hey hey buy the way have u ever observed a taxi driver who remembers as many roads and lanes, shortcuts according to scientists they get addicted to remember new places

Birds are the one of the beautiest thing in this earth. They enjoy a lot by going from one place to another. They come and go from season to season. This is very common in every country in this world. There are millions of varieties of birds in this beautiful worlds. So, their taste may also vary from time to time and goes here and there to another place and stays there for few months and come back to their native place. One thing is great that is every year in that season they come to that place only they will not change this. Hats of to those birds that travel long distance and having a good memory and the one who is front gives the direction and also split the air and goes forward.Great!

The other day I read in papers that two pigeons were taken from Bangalore to Mumbai and on reaching Mumbai house, withing two days both escaped. After eight days one pigeon came to Bangalore house, whereas the other pigeon did not. May be it lost it's way. Mumbai was new to pigeon and how did it come to the place of origin flying in the correct direction? Since the pigeon has particular type of identification, the masters recognised it. Even the cats and dogs will come home correctly. My own cats have come home after some time. So I feel they have extra smelling sense or any extra intelligence, which God has given them.

i ones visited a far place, very far from home. and we pass so many rice fields and rivers. and there is this one place where i saw from the bus window, a flock of birds of different colors and sizes. it was so nice to look at them yet they were very aloof because they fly so easily at one sound then return again. i was told they were migratory birds. wonderful, isnt it? ann

Yes Yugasini, your observation is very correct. In Orissa, India I have visited a lake called Chilka lake. In a particular season every year birds from all over the world come here. They stay for a certain period of time and then they go back home. You can see rare species of birds during that time. WE do not know God' creation. How these birds know the exact time to migrate to this particular place. But certainly it is a wonderful sight to see so many different birds all at one place. Tourists come in large numbers to see this. But I did not get a chance to see them though I have lived in the state Happy mylotting

I live in the Southern California desert so most of our birds do not migrate. We have a heck of a Monarch Butterfly migration every year though! The changing of the animal guard with the seasons is one of God's grand gestures, I think he made them that way so that no one can hog the wildlife all to themselves, they go and brighten someone elses season and life and then like a dream or apparition, they go on to wherever they are headed or the head back to where they came from. It is amazing that they can find their way over all those miles isn't it?

God'sgift indded. Animals do have that inbuilt instinct which helps them to move from place to place backward and forward just about the same time and in the same manner all the time. Animals rely on this instinct for survival skills. They are less dependant than the human is in this sense. Animal migration and the timing of these migrations forms a very important part of the study which allows us humans to learn even more about the animal kingdom.

Yes birds are very intelligent, and the do migrate every year. The fly south in the winter here in the US, and then fly back north in the summer. When they start we will see large amounts of them in the sky above us, and sometimes they will fill our front yard when they rest. it is a beautiful sight seeing thousands of birds flying all at once.
