Nintendo DS? Nintendo DS Lite?

I really need some help on this one guys. My eldest son had a DS Lite for Christmas and birthday (his birthday is 6th January) as he was then 8. My middle son really wants one but I have told him that he couldn't have one until he too was 8. The only problem is that his birhtday is in May so I couldn't give it to him as a joint birthday and Christmas present. So I came up with a possible answer to this and that is to buy him a reconditioned old style DS. They are of course a lot cheaper but I was wondering what the huge difference is between the DS and DS Lite.
I know the DS Lite comes in lots of different colours and is slimmer but is that where the differences end? Can you still send messages between a DS and a DS Lite? I would really appreciate your help on this one

Hi there KMPierce and welcome to mylot
Thanks you so much for your response you have no idea how much that has helped me out. Darn Christmas!! Haha I know it seems a bit odd to be doing Christmas shopping now but it is the only way I can do things in order to relax and enjoy the build up to the day without the stress!! Do they write messages to each other on them too?
Thanks again

Yes, they can write messages and have everything that the DS lite has. They can also play the same game as two player- if they game is a two player game. I'm not sure how they hook up on this, but I'm sure the instruction book will say (or your kids will probably figure it out).

Hi ya apples99
I would of course rather buy a DS Lite as that is much better I know but I don't think it is fair because my eldest didn't get one til he was 8 and my middle son is only 6. Also I can get a DS for a reasonable price and don't mind buying him one of those so I just wanted to see if the DS and DS Lite were compatable!
Thanks for responding
