Hi friends,
Today i went to a shop for recharging the mobile with the Rs.240.. I gave the shop keeper the Rs.500 currency note.. I was little shocked what he do secretly. He just use his calculator to calculate the balance amount with the calculator in the drawer having the money in it...
Do you still use the calculators for such simple calculations???
Do you think that the technology makes us fooler and lazier??
May i have your views please?
Have a great day friends...

Hmmm... Is there any rule like this in your country??
Actually, in my country generally there is no such rules..
Yes, he may be done a mistake before, so he may want to correct it in the future...
Have a great day..

He also may not trust the cash register himself, I don't know. The ones in the USA (most of them anyway) are just a calcultor with money, lol. I agree with you ElicBxn...

in the U.S.? rule/law, no, but if an owner says - do this or your fired, that's his right - I'm just suggesting that perhaps its something like that - he either once made a mistake and doesn't want to do it again, or its a shop rule...
I have to say, I've known a couple of people that were so traumatized by bad teachers that they had trouble for years and years to do even basic math

Dear dbutheking,
Hahaha, you can read my mind..I was thinking
of this discussion the other day when my husband
was discussing some numbers with me, and my hand
automatically grab the calculator that is just
infront of me. Actually it is just a simple
calculation of 48 by 6 hours...48/6 = 8..lol
This is making me go lazy, by right I should
practice my mental aritmetic more often.
All the best and do keep in touch!

Dear dbutheking,
I was thinking of starting this topic, but I put
it on hold because I only can handle a topic a
day..lol ( I normally start a topic of discussion, one
a day , FIFO ~ First In First Out principle
)
It is great that you started this topic, I can join in the
discussion too...thank you!
You are right, we tend to rely on this technology
too frequently and it became our routine. We tend to
drive even though the it is a walking distance. WE actually
can just look for our friend next door, but we prefer to
sms him, we actually can mentally calculate those simple
arithmatics, but we use the calculator instead :)
Thnaks and take care!

So, you start only one topic a day and make the discussion so lively by commenting back for the comments right? Sounds really cool.. I mostly receive very less responses in my discussions so i usually start 3 or 4 discussion that comes up in my mind at the time and also the happenings around me just like this topic..
As, i receive less responses, i can easily handle those..
Yes, technology makes us lazier than ever.. But i think it is unavoidable these days.
Have a great day..

Hi Iriene,
Did you started this discussion before? Or forget to start this discussion?
Yes, 48/6 is really a simple calculation anything having multiplications or divisions greater than 15 is somewhat tough for me..
Do you think technology makes us addicted so that it doesn't allow our brain to function for calculations?

I guess he just wants to be safe than sorry. If he gives you excess change then he might not have to shoulder the loss for the excess. And yes, there is also that possibility that technology is making us lazier. We no longer do things manually, almost everything is automated. I make calculations a lot and I always use the calculator in the office, but once in while, when I am out shopping, I still make mental calculations when I buy stuffs so that my mind won't get too rusty

I guess that is why they say that the people who make these high-tech things are the lazy ones, they didn't want to do it manually so they find easier or automated ways to do it

Hi silverglint,
Yes, if he gives excess change to the customers it would be a loss for him and if he gives less change it would be embarassing for him.. Yes, surely technology makes us lazier and everything is automated..
Have a great day.

sometimes it's just for the sake of speed.
i use one sometimes when figuring out bills, usually so i don't mess up the balance thinking about too many things at once.

Hi scarlet,
Yes, calculators are more faster than the manual calculations for the bills...
So, you are using calculators most of the time..
That's fine.. Thanks for your views
Have a great day...

At times I would prefer to use the calculator.
However for simple calculation, I will just
count it on my mind. For those work task like
for quotation with percentage discount, formulae
for chemical misture, definitely the calculator is
very helpful!
I do agree that technology has it pros and cons.

Hi james,
Yes, we would prefer the calculator for the complicated calculations else we can count it in the mind itself..
What is the pros and cons means?
Have a great day.

I don't know really but i think they should use this as an assurance not to make mistakes and prevents the customer like you to go berserk with the employee if he/she goes wrong. technology maybe makes us lazier but also makes us even have accuracy on our jobs, just like what they guy is doing.@dbutheking (2347)

Even while busy in preparing the movie, responded my discussion.very happy..
You are correct, we need faster and more accurate these times...

Naw, some people have a difficult time with big mathematics. Nothing wrong with it.
Some people even have to think about it for a minute, it's not like 2+2 is 4. I even had to think about 500-240. And sometimes when people have to think about it, they just use the calculator. It's just a way of making things easier and faster. Nothing wrong with it. It's no different than a cashier using a register. They punch in the amount you give them, it gives them the price difference which is your change and you're off. I don't think there's anything wrong with it, it's life. Can't win 'em all.

Hi,
So, you are telling that the in this fast moving world we need more faster equipments like calculators which is faster compared to our brain. Is it? Well, i have to agree about it. Technology just ruined our mental abilities..
Have a great day..

I know it is not necessary to use the calculator to calculate this kind of simple math. However, we have depended on the computer and we also trust the calculator more than ourselves. Using the calculator should give us the correct answers in my opinion.
I love China

You are correct. It is not necessary to use it for simple calculations. But still they are using, it is little worrying...
We began to trust technologies than ourselves. Eventhough they give us correct answers we may use manually for simple calculations. Yes, computers and calculators helps to find correct answers fastly...
Have a great day.

Some people want to make sure they are doing the right calculations before giving change. With the economy the way it is throughout the world, it may be more of a precaution then anything else. Is he the owner? Maybe he does it like that to make sure he's getting the right calculations. Or maybe he just had a headache that day and would rather use the calculator, I don't know.

Hi cowgirl,
You are correct. They want to do the right calculations to avoid some losses..
Do you think that the peoples rely more on the calculators than their own brain??

Marvellous invention calculators! It is habit to use them before your brain these days. I am amazed that kids can use calculators in the classroom. Back in the primitive days of dinosaurs we were not allowed to use them and always had to manually do all calculations. You would think I would be better at mathematics because of it but sadly, I rely on my calculator!

Hi paula,
Ha Ha Ha.. Yes, calculators are surely a marvellous invention, no doubt about it..
But, it really makes us lazier with the mental calculations.. When i am at the 10th i won't allow to use the calculators for mathematics, but the childrens are using it from 8th onwards.. If it goes on like this, what would be our future life...
Yes, i must admit that i also rely on calculators for some extent. But i try to use my brain than calculators. Only for complex calculations i use the calculators..
Have a great day,

Most inventions have addicted us so that we seldom use our brains. There are times when we have to remember all the tables from the elementary school which will help a long time. But now, people forget the tables at an early stage and rely on computers for simple calculations too.I have a friend who needs a calculator to say what is 1 plus 1.
.Cheers!

Even for 1+1 using calculators??
I hope it was not you..lol...
Yes, technology makes our brain less active after the inventions of computers and calculators..
Yes, most of them forget the tables.. Do you remember it? I remember upto 16 only..
But when it comes for a quick calculation i am convenient under 10...
Have a great day.
