Why Are Motorcycles To Damn LOUD?

This occurs on a daily basis during the nice weather, and it's starting to drive me bat$hit crazy!!! Picture me sitting on the outdoor patio at Second Cup, a nice little cafe with a patio that has an iron gate around the patio. I sit at the same table every day, or the one next to it if "mine" is in use. A bite will coast into the parking lot, the driver will remove her/his helmet, and go in for a drink. Then the person will come out later, jump on the bike, and ride off. The NOISE that stupid thing makes gets right INSIDE me, and lingers, long after the rider is a good two blocks away. I jam my fingers in my ears, I turn up my music, but still, the sound gets right INSIDE ME, and I can FEEEEL IT. I hate it!!! It's a form of what I like to call "noise assault." Am I the only one bothered by this? What can be done to make motorcycles quieter? How can the rider stand the noise? What's the appeal of a vehicle that noisy?

You are exactly right about this. I hate a loud vehicle or a loud motorcycle. It gets on my nerves when people buy special items to make them even louder also. I think there should be noise polution control put into place.

You are not the only affected by this, I also have always hate motorcycles as well, as opposed to most people I know. The appeal of it being noisy may be attribute to the fact that it draws other people's with such basic interests attention. Meh.

I witnessed an bike/van accident in August of 1980. The former roomie and I had just been commenting on the noisy bike about 3 blocks before the accident, when we both had been stopped at a red light at the same time and the bike had been next to us. So, I can answer for some of the riders... since we got the chance to ask him while we drove him home (after EMS checked him out) He told us that a lot of them like them loud because they have a better chance of being heard than seen, because people just don't see them - witness the old guy that turned right in FRONT of him, causing the accident!
