Can Riddles and Brain Teasers Really Improve Your IQ?

I just heard about this study that was conducted by researchers in Japan and they basically determined that people who spend a few minutes each day doing brain teasers and riddles have IQs that are a few points higher than those who don't within a control group over time.
Has anyone heard this before? Does anyone take advantage of this and spend some time each day doing brain exercises? Or has anyone been doing this for a while and reaping the benefits?
I want to make sure I'm still smart as I get into old age.
I was able to find this site with a bunch of different categories of riddles:

Which I found from this place:

I haven't heard of that study before but I can believe it. If you don't use it, you lose it. I used to love riddles and brain teasers but lately I have been into Hidden Object games and writing at content sites such as Mylot, Toluna and Associated Content. I think getting involved in discussions like this on different interests and levels can help sharpen the mind. I don't know if keeping your mind sharp could improve your IQ or not but it can't hurt. I have an easy one for you...What gets bigger the more you take away from it?

I have heard this and it does make some sense. If you keep your mind sharp by continually teaching it how to solve new problems then, you become a little more intelligent, at least in the problem solving aspect.
I know that as we age and our memories seem to worsen, one very good way to help stay mentally sharp is to do puzzles, word searches, and things of that nature. The more you do with your mond, the stronger it becomes.

I haven't heard of that before, but it would be cool if it's true. I play a lot of puzzle games on my DS (not like Brain Academy or anything like that though), like Sudoku, Crosswords, and the Layton games. Do you think those count? (^_^)
