how can i get my webcam working on ubuntu linux?

I've tried blogvux.free.fr, camorama, cheese ffmpeg and many other things to get my sabrent webcam with mic going but how on earth can i get it to work with ubuntu? I am also experiencing mirphone issues since the beginning, with speed and great wireless connections you can't beat linux, but small technicalities can be a pain. If anyone has a clue let me know
