Hi there friends, I am from Chennai, India, and we have the best Bus service in the whole country. It is the most economical way to travel, and we have frequent bus services, which touch even the remotest place in our city. Not only our city, our entire state, is well connected by Buses, and one can travel any where in the state, throughout the clock. Ofcourse, our Buses are all not very hi tech, it has only the basic facilities. How about your Bus services.

Oh, how I long for a decent public transport system! You might have probably known that the bus transport service of my city Pune is one of the worst in the country. I had gone to Mumbai last month and was overwhelmed by the services of BEST, Mumbai.
Come to Pune for a nightmarish ride! Noisy, smoky buses with many broken windows and faulty brakes; irritating honking horns; faulty scheduling, disinterested drivers, conductors and employees. Buses are ill-maintained and move too slow. Many a times they breakdown in the midst of the road; giving rise to traffic jams. Unclean buses are a common phenomenon. Even most of the stations are filthy. The waiting areas aren't that spacious mostly. Add to all the mess, they executed the most idiotic project on earth a few years ago- The BRT. Total failure in Pune!
For most parts I would blame the citizens than the Government. They many a times act quite uncivilized. I seldom travel in buses, because of that.
One of the few silver linings is that the cost is reasonably economical and the trips cover a large area of the city and suburbs.
However, thankfully these days the officials have started taking note of the pathetic condition. (finally) But there efforts, dunno how effective they are going to be!

I couldn't agree more.. except that I'm in a different country & town. Where I live is 35 miles from the nearest city with a population over 1,800 people, and 50 miles from the nearest city over 6k people. It's almost impossible to buy certain things here and getting specialized medical care means that you have to have some way to get into the city. I have a slight disability and I would LOVE to be able to take a bus to get around here just in my own town.. Or to get to/from the city!

Thanks for the response cannibal. I have not been to Pune, but I was under the impression, that since the services of BEST in Bombay which is considered to be the best in India, I thought that the entire state of Maharashtra will also be like that. Let us hope it improves for the better in the future.

In our city, bus transportation has greatly changed these years. Firstly, the number of buses and bus lines has increased, leading to far and wide of the city, esp. the newly developped residence regions. The bus conditions are much better, both for eqipment and cleaning. Besides, the service is improved, including on time arrival, politeness, etc.
Recently, a surprising news is a large number of young girls have taken the position of conductors. They are getting prepared in the hope of being hired for the 2010 world expo in shanghai.

China is fast emerging as a major power, so it is no surprise, that it is improving the bus facilities. We also have a very few woman conductors.
Thanks for the response.

Hi Ramesh ,
In New Delhi , the bus service is also good enough . However, it is a big headache in using the public transport in going from Delhi to and from neigbouring areas- like Noida, Gurgaon etc .
Bus service is irregular for these places - and number of buses is lesser, causing many people to use their private two-wheelers , cars etc instead of these Buses.
Things seem to be improving ;yet slowly .
If the capital city has such conditions;imagine the plight of smaller cities.
In fact , I have heard that no one even gives even a minor attention to the public transport .
Regards

Thanks for the response sweety_81. Yes I have seen that the bus services in Delhi proper has improved trememdrously. My first visit to Delhi was in 1975, and during that time the Bus services were horrible.
One plus point you have is the world class Metro. I really enjoy riding in the Delhi metro, as it is a real pleasure to do so.

The bus service in my city, I should say, BAD!
yeah, the bus routes are increasing annually. I'm living in a city with around 10 million people. For some major routes, the intervial time is ok, but for some minor routes, you have to wait over 15 minutes. And such buses finish work early, at around 19.00. Very few bus routes are 24-hour running.
The buese are very crowded all day long exept the few hours when people are at work.
Bus service and drivers' attitude is seldom satisfactory.
The only reason I still commute to work is it is economic compared to taxies and private cars. You only spend less than 1.00 yuan to go very far. The fare is normally settled, not based on distance. And you don't need to pay high patking fees. If I drive to work, my colleauge says the parking fee would be 500 yuan one month not including the petrol.

Yes, for common people like us, the bus is the best way of commuting. What to do, the prices of all things like petrol and others are going up, but our income is the same. But for a city of 10 million people, the government should certainly, increase the timings and they should certainly should run it for atleast 20 hours every day.
Thanks for the response.

I have nothing to say but there are too many people...the bus service here is also very good and convenient at working time when people will not take bus,and it's the only time that I can sit on the bus here...
People are everywhere at the bus station and on the bus,on one can easily get on the bus and find a seat.I think 10 minutes a bus is not enough, but too much on the road will make the traffic worse...
I hope one day I have no need to rush the buses...

Well beeduzhe, both India and China have a very large population, and you can find a crowd everywhere, like in beaches, railway stations, bus stations, etc. What to do we have to suffer.
Thanks for the response.

Our bus service is average. To reach my place, one has to take a bus which scheduled for every hour. If you miss it, you can wait for another until 6.30 p.m. It's not a hi tech but only the one with basic facilities. There's a few that equipped with air conditioner. But if you want to use buses as your transportation to school or work, it's advisable not to rely on it too much. It's not really that reliable.

Now days, we also have the low floor A/C buses which are run in Banglore. Even though the services are few, these buses have hit the road in Chennai.
Thanks for the response.
