Just look at my plums......

Advice please. I have a large number of small and very sweet plums on a tree in my garden. However, I have absolutely no idea what to do with them. I can eat them raw, or stewed or in a pie. But what else can I do with my plums?

Hi ya p1kef1sh Shame I don't live near you as I would love to take some off your hands, my kids love them! Can you maybe make some jam with them or a crumble with some blackberries? We picked lots of blackberries at the weekend, maybe I could do a swap with you, some of my blackberries for some of your plums! Can you maybe freeze them? Now there's a good idea! Maybe...

Crumble is good and I can easily find some blackberries although I don't have too many in the garden this year. Move closer! LOL.

Raw, stewed, pie, jams, preserves, dried, frozen fruit can be used in making fruit smoothies. Frozen fruit is great summer snack. Cut in chunks before freezing. You can also do some canning.

Other folk have mentioned canning. I have never seen that done here. I need to look into how you do it. Thanks for the ideas. I quite favour the smoothie one in particular.

When i discovered how much i loved mangos and they are so unavailable in the winter wonderland of my home state. If you saw them they were very expensive. I bought a lot in season and canned and frozen. I had not a clue how to do it but i bought a book. You could probably find something about it online just as easy.

You can make jelly with them or slice up and add to ice cream! Another idea is to make a plum cobbler with them. I love to eat them fresh off the tree when they are a slight green right before fully ripening. They are awesome that way with a touch of salt. Happy eating!

I have picked just enough for a crumble tonight. But there's a load more. I like cobbler. Maybe I'll try that next. Yep - lovely straight from the tree. I haven't tried them with salt though.

That's all I ever did with the plums from our plum tree when I was little. I would climb up there and eat those little plums raw all afternoon. Then spend all night running to the bathroom. Good luck with your plum receipe hunting.

I like to make, upside down plum cake. I halve the plums and lay them flat side down in a baking tin, that is well buttered and sprinkled with sugar, then cover with a cake dough and bake! Serve with cream, custard or (my all time favourite) ICECREAM! You could also 'juice' them either on there own or with another fruit or you could make plum chutney. That's nice with ham and pork.

Certainly you can eat them raw! I would imagine that you can use them that same as any other fruit. LOL..you might want to be a little careful in how many you eat in one sitting. They work that same way that prunes do, which are only dried plums. You just know that if you're stuck in the bathroom all day, that everyone you know would just happen to pop over for a visit...

I've stopped eating them from the tree now just in case. Although I clean the bathroom so I guess that I can mess it up a little. I got some lovely eucalyptus room spray in Singapore - might come in handy soon!

Wow, lucky you. What else would you need to do with your yummy plums?? If you are stuck and want still more ideas....try some plum jam, a favourite of mine or plum sauce for your Chinese cooking.

Plums are great to have. Make some plum jelly out of them. You use a water bath canner to can the plums. It's so easy, and you will have fresh plum jelly to put on your pantry shelves. Great tasting stuff.

A large oversized pot, with a lid that fits, will suffice for a hot water bath canner. That is usually what you will need to do jellies with. Try to set a wire in the bottom of the pot, so that the jars are not sitting right on the bottom of the pot. Once you have your jelly made, put them in the pot, and let the water come to a boil. Then let it process for about 10 minutes. Be careful when you remove them from the pot, since they are really hot. Set them on a towel to cool off. You will hear them popping, as they start sealing. You jelly will stay for a long time on your pantry shelves.

Seems everyone has already given you the same ideas I would of given ya. The best is just to dehydrate them or make jam/jelly/preserves out of the extras to enjoy off season. My family is so into fruit and veggies that I never have any extras except for tomatoes. The bananas I JUST bought last night at Walmart are already gone today. That's 8 bananas in less than 12 hrs. I can't afford to eat. lol

Sorry it has taken me so long to get over and respond to your question P1key, I am so late that you might not have any plums any more but in case you do... You could always make a mincemeat pie and then sit in the corner like Little Jack Horner and stick in your thumb, from what I understand you will then pull out a plum, so it seems to me that would be One way to use them up! Of course if you have already done that and are tired of mincemeat pie you might find a recipe or 2 here for some other ideas for your plums!! http://www.recipezaar.com/recipes/plums

I have four jars of mincemeat and am not allowed any more GEL. I'll just have to look for recipes. Thanks for the link. Wonder if there's anything there for plums and honey?

You can cut the plums onto two and put in water every night in luke warm water then when you wake up, you drink the water and then no problems at all with constipation so if ever people are having that you can give them the plums.

Wouldn't I have to get up to pee instead though! LOL. An interesting idea though. We are pretty good on fruit and veg here and constipation isn't a problem. But you never know what might happen tomorrow!

i never thought that the plums can be cooked to eat. maybe the plums there are different from those here. we have plums in the countryside in my hometown, but we only pick them from the trees to eat after washing when they are ripe.

If you invite me over, I'll bring some bottles of booze, my husband, and our friend Heerb. Berb makes the best Manhatttans in the world, and instead of putting a cherry in the cocktails, he puts a plum in and I love them!!!! I drank a half dozen of them one night, and could have had a few more, but I did need to find my way out the door to catch a cab. LOL If i can crash there for a few days with my friends and my booze (and I'll share the booze with you of course) we can all drink Manhattans, and solve your plub problem.

You can dry them and turn them into prunes. That might be good since you're so full of you-know-what! Someone's probably already said that but I just couldn't resist!

Pffttt! LOL. Actually my lips numbed after I ate a few - I've never sprayed them but I did look up to check that they weren't some outlandish poisonous ones! LOL.

If I could I would Hatley. Those are some great ideas. I am amazed that in California of all places you don't get more fresh fruit. Demand it be put on the menu!

Or just compost them. Wonder if they give the worms the runs?

Plum Jelly is one of my favorites. My mother-in-law cans her plums, though. I'm not sure what all goes into that process, but my husband says that it was one of his favorite treats when he was growing up. I always had a tendency to sit and eat them straight off the tree.
