Breaking a Bad Habit

I have a bad habit of biting my nails! Sometimes I can go along time without bothering them...but once they get long enough sometimes I just can't help but bite them, and then they get short again! Sometimes the skin on the tip of my finger even feels painful!
Anyone else have this bad habit? Has anyone ever gotten rid of this habit? Any tips?

I gnawed on giant sweet tarts (they don't make them any more that I can find) until I stopped
now my roomie bites when they get ragged or she's nervous, but what you might do is start trimming them with clippers until you are out of the habit of bitting them, then maybe you can get them a bit longer, but if you are working with the animals, short nails are probably best, you won't get animal waste under them

My nails never really get long enough to worry about working with animals :) But maybe I should start clipping them anyways.
Ooo, I like the idea of using candy to stop this habit! lol. I actually see gaint sweet tarts in the store I go to all the time :) They are really yummy, I like the giant chewy ones they have.

It's very hard to break bad habits, well for one, because when we say "don't do X" the thing we are thinking about (doing), or course, is X. I used to bite my nails all of the time. When I finally decided to break myself of that habit, what I did, instead of making a goal to quit biting my nails (a "negative" that in thought includes the word/behaviour I'm trying to dissassociate myself from)I, instead, made it a goal to grow my finger nails out long. (Yes, I'm a straight guy, and this is a little "off" for a guy, but I'm not talking uber-ridiculously long, I'm talking just a little bit (too) long. There was this point, after my nails got so long, that I simply clipped them, and continued to groom (clip) them as normal afterward. That was several years ago. I went from a person who would bite my nails practically daily, to where now, I've probably bitten my nails less than a half-dozen times in the last two or three years, and those were conscious choices, to do something like rip out a hangnail or something.

You are welcome. Both cognitive psychology and quantum physics (not to mention the unscientific principles of so many religions and philosophies ["faith the size of a mustard seed" comes to mind]) teach us that we get what we think about.

lol don't worry! when you said grow your nails out long I wasn't picture french tips and polish :D
I would defeniatly like to grow my nails out longer, but maybe if I just file them a little bit...because sometimes I bite them with I think my nails are uneven, or if there's a weaker part.
Thanks! :D

When I was a kid I did bite my nails. I played alot of sports and kept busy so having short nails was a benefit. My mother told me once the boys wouldn't like me if I had short nails. That cured the habit. The nail biting stopped. Ever since that time I've had long nails. Sometimes they get so long I can't type. Am real lucky to have hard nails that don't split or break unless they get to the point they are close to a half inch long. Some people have tried putting pepper on their nails and it worked. Think there is something on the market you can buy to help aid in stopping the habit.

hi lily.
this is one habit that i hate with my step-daughter. she always bite them. while in front of the tv or doing nothing on the bed. sometimes, she also bite nails of her younger brother. i just don't know how to stop this not so good habit. why don't you use a nail-cutter? I guess that would be the best solution for this.

You have only one option, get one of those hear funnel shaped protectors, like they use to keep dogs from tearing out their stitches after surgery. To be sure you don't try to wiggle out of your headgear, I would advise you be handcuffed at all times. Have your roomies lock you in a closet and keep you in there until you miss the outside world more than you wanna bite on a nail.
Okay maybe that is a litte extreme.
You could start biting your toe nails instead....
That would be a great story. LOL

LOL!!!!
I don't think I have reached that point...I actually think just your extreme story scared me out of ever biting my nails again lol.
Biting my toenails might eventually strain my neck.
I think I've been really good about biting my nails lately

Don't have it.
Have heard putting tabasco sauce on or chili powder works wonders as a deterant. Keep lots of water out!

I have this bad habit of peeling the tough skin off my thumbs and soles of my feet. I have not even tried getting rid of the habit for I do it without realizing it, although it is very irritating for my family and people around me. I can understand how you feel, take it easy and you will not bite your nails, for even I do it when I am very tense or anxious about something otherwise I don't do it for a very long time.
