Scary thoughts. DNA testing.

I've always believed that DNA testing is infallible and maybe so. It has greatly affected the field of forensic investigations and helped in solving cases. Recently I have watched a TV program where the jury convicted an accused based purely on DNA results. The man vehemently denied his participation in the crime of rape and the family continued to appeal the case. Further investigation was made and finally the process done by the authorities was examined and found faulty and the interpretation of results was flawed. Eventually the convicted man was released and the court admitted its' mistake. What a terrible thing.
I wonder if DNA testing and published results are not trustworthy, what resort can an ordinary citizen do to protect himself. Second opinion? independent testing facility? or what. It is, I believe a scary scenario.
Any idea or opinion?
