Using the hand

India

Generally all of us use our right hand to drink any beverages. But some people use their left hand to sip if they go to any restarent. The reason they say is that who ever comes here, they use their right hand only to hold the cup, and normally no body uses their left hand. So, that portion will be hygenic compared with the other side. I also think that what they say may be true to some extent. So I also started using my left hand while holding the coffee cup.Which hand do you use to hold your coffee or tea cup?

Well, considering i am left handed, i already use my lfet hand when holding a coffee cup, so i guess i have been drinking from the "more hygenic side" all along. That is an interest tip, but the more you share it, the more other people with start doing the same, and it will negate all possible health benefits! LoL

I was just teasing with you, and i actually think it is an interest, thought provoking topic anyways. And to top it off, how many people that actually visit the coffee houses you do will see this and think the same thing? my bet, probably not many, so the "hygenic" thing will still be true...even if SOME people realize this and start doing the opposite, the majority are still going to go with thwat is more comfotable for them...which will be to hold the cup in their right hand and drink that way. As or retrieving a post..you can't unfortunately...once you hit the send button it is out there, and there is no way to take it back od ammend it..

Yes. Several times I experienced the same thing. Some times before posting my discussions, I will go through it and correct the typographical errors or omissions in it. Some times simply I will post it and after seeing my post, I will find some spelling mistakes and grammatical mistakes which happend while typing in a hurry. Some keys in the keyboard might have been pressed softly and that is the reason for the omission of certain letters.

Vathsala Aunty, Generally in south india people use right hand for having food & beverages. Since in restaurents may be bcoz hygine they use left hand to sip. In hotels they dont wash properly, they just put in water and remove off. So i dont have coffee or tea or juices outside.

You are true. We can't expect hygiene outside. besides, every day so many people visits restaurants to sip their favourite beverages. The cup in which beverage is served to us might be used by several people earlier. Among them smoker, drunkard and contageous diseased person, leper, or who knows what sort of person used it. That is why usually I won't take anything outside except tender coconut water which will be opened in front of us and a new straw is used.

Usually in South India, earlier when coffee was served, instead of saucer they were giving a small steel cup like vessel (dubara) with tumbler (steel glass). My relative lady use to drink coffee in the steel dubara instead of steel glass quoting the same reason. When the glasses are washed after usage, I do not see any reason to do this. But in hotels, may be you will have doubt whether they will wash properly so you can follow this method.

At home,we will be washing the vessels neatly, but if the maid washes our vessels, Before using them I will check whether it is washed properly or not. Some times the vessel in which we prepare rice and the pot in which we boil milk will not be cleaned properly and some particles will be sticking in the sides which needs to be cleaned. At homes, the vessels to be cleaned will be less compared to the restarents and they are not able to clean it properly. Then how can I think that the vessels in the restarants will be cleaned properly when similar kind of people will be washing them there also.

Actually sometimes with coffee I will use both hands. If I do that my left hand is holding it, while my right hand holds it just to keep it steady. I don't like to take any chances with hot coffee so I feel better having both hands on it. I dropped hot chocolate on my leg once and burned myself really bad, so I am really careful when holding any hot beverages.

Yes. What others think about us holding with one hand or two hands is not the matter. safety is the important thing. If you are comfortable using both your hands while drinking hot beverages, then go ahead.

In fact, I never think about it when I drink the beverage, or even I never have the question which hand should I use to hold the cup. But I start to have a try after viewing your discussion. Not as convenient as I used to do. Maybe you're right, the hygenic element is vitial to form the habit. But you're so curious that you decide to immitate such a practice, it will make you different in the restaurant, after all, it looks cool and what's more, your reason is cool, too, others easily trust it that you have a good descent. Well, I will continue to use my right hand to cope with such things, but I explain the reason to other people when I find someone using their left hand.

I did not mean to imitate and I have no thoughts of imitating anybody. Why should I? Just I expressed my feeling. My thought may sound right for some people and wrong for some people, for which I can't help. That is individuals' opinion.
