which is true: napping is a must or napping happens because it's needed?

i've always loved reading and had grown up with the fact and elders' saying that children must take a nap. however, i've also come across the fact that the human body is very smart. it lets you know when you're hungry, thirsty or tired. so, which is which? i mean you'd find yourself in a snooze one way or another if you're tired. children would make up for lost nap time with a longer hours of regular sleep. children often sleep a little (if you're lucky)or wouldn't sleep at all if asked to (based from experience with my own child). so?

I have had the experience of dropping off to slepp at about one ten in the day after a good lunch right here in the office. Its not something I could help. It happened involuntary and I was scared that the office would take offense over something I genuinely could not help. I therefore believe that sometimes, at least, it cannot be helped depending on the amount of fatigue one's body has undergone.

hi bluepatch not to scare you but have you had yourself tested for diabetes lately . we diabetics get sleepy when our blood sugar is high, and those who are undiagnosed will have that same symptom. you will just fall asleep no matter how much you do try to stay awake.

HI ritchelle, According to me, napping is not a must, but it is needed especially for small kids. Small kids will get cranky and fussy if they don't have enough rest in the afternoon, the only time they will get fussy was during dinner time. Therefore,it is needed for them to get a short nap at least for 1-2 hours in the aternoon. As for adult,it is for compulsory to get a nap in the afternoon especially for working people, there is no nap at all during weekend as they need to work at that time. Only for housewife or unemployed people, then they will have chance to get a nap if they wish too.For me, I will have a nap on and off,not everyday. If my body feel tired, then I will nap while my son is napping.

we're the same there. however, if am really tired i close my eyes and my son gets the signal already to quiet down. if he is tired he follows my example. however, he always has 2 hours more of his nap time than me. an hour for me would do unless am on a cold medication which can make me sleepy even after two days of taking it .

Napping happens because mom needs a break! Both my girls took naps. My oldest daughter (who is in her 30s) recently complained that I made her take naps. Yeah, but she slept! My son wouldn't take naps. He was like the Energizer Bunny on speed. All day long, go, go, go. The one good thing about it was he went to sleep at night when his head hit the pillow.

with everything that you said this is just a real proof that nature has a way of balancing things: making them work out for everyone in the end . p.s. "mommy needs a break that's why there is a nap." is my favorite .

hi ritchelle no two kids are alike and each have different sleep needs so watch your child and see when he or she gets cranky and is rubbing his or her eyes. then is the time to put them down for a nap. Most really small kids will need naps even if ony a half hour and they will soon show you when.

thanks for the response. if my child is cranky it is because either his dad is teasing him or he is his usual self . the skin around his eyes turn a little red and this is a sign that he'd fall asleep soon . yehey!!!

yes i've noticed that the inforced nap time for kids never really seem to work. i did read an article just the other day tho saying that naps are good for us and will help us sleep better at night and think better. even if its only closeing our eyes for 20 mins.

when i was single i used to think that people who say they nap in just 30 minutes is nuts. now that am a mom, i can see a big difference in even as little as 10 minutes of me closing my eyes and being lost in oblivion .

I have actually read some articles recently that say that children don't really need naps at all unless they didn't sleep well the night before. One article said teenagers and young adults need more naps than children do. As we all now, young children have boundless energy, and if they don't take a nap during the day, they will be more ready to go to bed at night. It can be difficult to try to get a 3 year old child to go to sleep at night, if he/she had a long nap during the day. Teenagers and young adults are believed to need naps more so. Some companies are even experimenting with giving office workers "nap time" around the 2:30p.m. time. Studies have shown that the workers that got a nap from 2:30-3:30 were more productive the rest of the afternoon than the workers that didn't get a nap.

i very much agree with you. based from my personal experience on myself and not on my child this is true. however, long night's sleep or not my child still sleeps away his nap. what nap? he sleeps. count an average of 3 hours .

Hi Ritchelle, It is true, our body is smart enough to know what we need and what we not. I think napping happens when it needed. If the body doesn’t need it then it is very difficult to get a good nap. About the children they need more nap for their good health. I don’t think there is any force need to them for making a sleep. But it is upto a particular age and after the age of 2 then you may force to do the same. I am telling this from my own experience.

Children must take a nap because the parents need a break!!! I think the human body will let you know when it's tired. However, there are a few illnesses that mimics being sleepy. I think in that case the body is tired, it's just that the people with the illness don't want to sleep so often!!!

I think napping is a must. Because for me like when you are so tired so can't help yourself but to nap. when it comes to kids, I think we tell them to nap if they woke up early so they could rest. Or sometimes, its the other way around. LOL! Older kids find it hard to nap already like my kid. What I do is I nap first and I will just find her beside me having her, too. Happy my lotting to you!

i believe that napping is momething we need. This is especially true for babies and small children. napping is our boy's way of energizing. When we wake from a nap our bodies are refreshed and ready to resume any activities that come our way. Naps can be short or long. Our bodies will let us know when the time is right.

I also love and fond of reading any books that gets my attention for sometimes if the book is very interesting. Taking a nap is a need sometimes to relax your mind and eyes. It is a must sometimes if you really are tired and it is needed.

Napping happens because it's what's being said by the brain. The feeling of sleepiness commonly follows exhaustion or fatigue but in other cases it happens when one is satisfied just like after eating. That is why we feel like having a nap after eating our lunch. The feeling of satisfaction is detected by the hypothalamus and thus signals one part of the brain to release melatonin (the sleeping hormone) that's why we feel sleepy. In children, napping is a must because it is in sleep that growth hormone is at it's peak level of release.

napping is needed, also did you know professional athletes in all sports, on game day right after practice they will go grab a nap before the game.
