That's a good descision sagnik, an external hard disk is more preferable since backing up is much easier and much organize than burning it on dvd. Everything will be in one place and you don't have to waste time inserting and ejecting piles of cd's when you are looking for some of your file although if one doesn't have the budget to buy an external hard disk, using cd/dvd is not bad.

I prefer external hard disk and I really feel bored burning DVD and Cd is very slow and it annoy me. I prefer to watch movies using my external hard drives and I would only uses the CD/DVD as a giveaway if needed but it rarely happen unless their is special occasion and need to distribute the slides or the photos or videos for examples after having a party to a friend.

I love external hard drives and I have a 250GB portable hard drive that looks a little like one of those whiskey flasks, very cute! I backup my important data once a week on a Friday. When you mention the CD/DVD drive are you referring to this as another form of backup as opposed to an external hard drive? If that's the case I still prefer and external hard drive. Andrew

Yes I definitely prefer External Hard disks over CD/DVDs. There are lots of causes behind it. First of all they are very easy to use, all of them are coming with USB or FireWire. They have large storage capacity to store media files and for backup. Mostly they are affordable and the data transfer rates are greater than CDs or DVDs and they are much more reliable too.
I use DVDs to show my work and showreels for my friends and everyone who wants to see but to store all data and to backup my OS data I always trust Hard Drives.

I have two external HDD. I have a huge collection of movies, wallpapers, songs and videos. I have an internal HDD of 500 GB but I have huge amount of collection so I need to buy another external HDD. I think it is better to store data in HDD rather than CD/DVD because it can last longer than in CD/DVD. I used to store data in CD/DVD but recently I am storing the data in external HDD
