Cats are much more independent and different by nature than dogs but I was wondering if it's possible to teach a cat some tricks that are otherwise common for dogs. Commands like sit, bring something or shake hands. OK, I know it's possible but I don't know anyone who actually does it. Did you trained your cat? What do you think about it?

The cats are very inteligent animals, but at the same time they are very independent. It is posible to teach them, but you need to be very, very, very patient. The think is the cat do not care about to please the owner.
Thats the diference between dogs and cats. The dog comes from wolves, and the wolves are hierarchical and social animals. In their groups lower-ranking individuals always try to please their superiors. That is one of the reasons because dogs are more easily to teach tricks.
Is a question of attitude more than inteligence.

They can learn anything a dog can learn. They are just much more independant and less loyal, so they choose not to listen a majority of the time. My cat knows her name, and comes when I call her. She used to fetch when she was a kitten. At one point she knew what "down" meant, as I was constantly saying it when she was a kitten because she used to climb EVERYTHING. She also knows what "no" means. My other cat knows the word "treat" and "cheese" lol. I'm sure they know much more than they lead me to believe. Unfortunately cats are not really pack animals like dogs, therefore do not really listen to or have an alpha male.

I bet the only traning a lame person like me can give a cat is not to puke and eliminate their faecal waste around in my house, I hate cats eliminating their faecal waste around 'cause I just cannot stand the smell of it...yuck...
so just in case if someone can train cats to avoide doing this in the house, in a professional and hygienic way apart from training it to do tricks like dogs, please do pass on the information to me too...
