Are you really going to eat that?

Or so something else with it? I will have to decant another bottle of olive oil later as the current one has just run dry. It should have gone in the salad dressing later but instead the catch on my shutter was sticking so I de stuck it with olive oil.
So what have you got in your store cupboard or fridge which you bought to eat but can do something else with?

Lots! I have to do the banking and so I have to make this short. I use olive oil - actually any oil - and make paste of it with salt and massage it allover my body. Then take a hot shower. This is a marvellous defoliator (is there such a word?) I dunno
My favourite quick trick is to put fabric softener in a squeezy bottle with some water and use it as febreze. Then I will take a lime or lemon and pierce it a few times and put it in the microwave for a couple of minutes - take it out6 and leave somewhere - acts as a wonderful air freshener. I can do amazing things with Baking Soda too
If I rhink of any more whilst in Bank then will respond again.

Hi cynthiann, well your kitchen appears to be a veritable caven of things with other uses. The massage tip sounds good, how much salt do you put in it? Of course we decant olive oil, it generally comes back from the press in an 18 kilo tin, have you tried lifting one of those up. It's a messy job pumping it out into litre bottles. I'm actually down to my last 5 kilo tin but I still pump it out. I have the avatars big bottle but that is strictly not to be mixed with anything else as he managed to keep it a deep green colour.
So the rest of your things, well I don't have a microwave so can't do the lemon thing but I used to pop them in the microwave when I had one prior to juicing them, a lot more juice comes out if you do that first. I've no idea what febreze is and don't run to fabric softener these days. And yes the word defoliater is right.

Cooking spray...I use it to de-stick things, too, and to quiet squeeky hinges!
Vinegar gets used for everything but salads: hair rinse, coffee-maker cleaner, drain cleaner, window cleaner...same for soda, well that part that isn't used for baking.
Corn starch is a great foot powder and a bit poured and swept into the tiny grooves stops the floor boards from creaking.
Salt...good as a gargle or to soften bath water or soak aching feet.

Any kind will do, so I buy whatever is cheapest. Pour about 1/4 c. baking soda in first, than a cup or two of vinegar, let it work a half hour, and flush drain with hot water for a few seconds.
Soda makes a good sink scrub, too :)

Hi dlr, I wonder if by any chance you're getting alerts as I have had only one today?
Vinegar is used for many things out here, but mainly as a cure all after olive oil. One or the other fixes most maladies round here. But I've never heard of adding vinegar to bath water before, it might soften the skin but you'd pong a bit afterwards. I can't even try it as I don't have a bath.

As for alerts i am only getting a few, i think that i only had 12 notifications for discussions friends started, and i usually have many more.
as for vinegar in the bath their is no smell afterwords, I would not like not having a bath tub, i love soaking in a hot bath in the evenings. It is so relaxing

Thea, because Maxwell's beaming face pops out at me whenever I am on myLot I thought of the hot chilli pepper oil (the secret ingredient)in the frig and would pour some of it in an empty trial size pump bottle to use as Mace (pepper spray). This is for self-defense of course when I run out of the store bought spray. Not that I need a lot of it... This site inspires me in ways I have not dreamed of in quite some time!

He really does stand out a treat amidst those soppy interest avtars
Now never mind the mace spray, have you actually got the homemade chilli oil, the real thing. All I've got is dried chilli flakes and olive oil and I can't see it working well, have you ever tried it with olive oil if I can persuade someone to grow me some chillies? Oops sorry, I did ask for things to do with things but now you've gone and set me off with a yearning for chilli oil.
It's good to hear that mylot has brought renewed inspiration to you lina.

Oh very funny indeed lina, I think not.
What Chinese restaurants in Greece. Unless they are hiding one away in Athens there aren't any. Well there is one up in town but it just pretends to be, most likely never heard the word chilli oil there. Your Dads version sounds what I was used to, deep reddy brown oil, perfect drizzled on prawn dumplings. It's the dim sum and the oil I miss most,
sob. I could live on dim sum every single day and never get bored, I suppose the chilli oil just wouldn't be the same without the dim sum.

Thea, my dad actually takes real chinese chilli peppers (little red nasty hot things) and grinds them with olive oil to make a paste/oil that can be used in cooking or dipping sauce. He doesn't do it as often now. I wouldn't think that chilli flakes would do it...try the Chinese restaurants in Greece and ask for "hot oil", not mustard but the hot oil they would use to cook with (if they cook the same way in Greece as they do in China). They should give it you in a tiny container and you'll see the reddish separation between the chilli oil off the peppers and whatever type of oil they use to mix the paste with. If you get the oil on your hands do not touch your eyes, whew, talk about a nasty burn.

No doubt about it; you are living healthily, yeah Thea.. and I can see how you must have been using it more extra due to the trees. One for healthy living; thanks for explaining the uses to me. I might try to dip in salads and dressings sometime in future, I'll ask my mom to do it for me then..
..nah uh, for a change, I'll do it and surprise her for my healthy living tag because I've been trying to change bits here and there her cooking style and habits.
..No wonder you are slim, aye.. healthy!

Hi Zed, well your mum doesn't need to use the expensive oil to cook with though naturally it goes in everything I cook, but the real benefit of olive oil is when it is used on salads or cheese, or as a dip for bread, or to keep your olives in or my favourite way is just to pour over tomatoes and basil with rock salt. I do use a lot to cook with if I can get the odd fresh chilli as I love garlic and chilli cooked in the oil and then some prawns thrown in, but served with lots of hot oil on it for the bread.
Mine will be ready for picking soon and I've been lining up volunteers as my friends have machines so can make light work of it, and I refuse to go up a wobbly three legged ladder when men are more than capable of doing it. Anyway once they are picked I will take them to the press myself if someone lifts the sacks into my car and then I'll have my own organic supply of extra virgin olive oil for free unless the man at the press charges me tax which he didn't do last time.
Anyway you won't need to use anywhere near the amount I get through, I do overindulge on the stuff but that's because I have my own trees.

I honestly don't know what's in my cupboards because they are always so full and need to be organized but, as soon as I do the kids mess them up again and my work was pointless.

true there are many things that have more than one uses. vinegar can also be used in case of stomach upsets (a spoon of vinegar in a glass of water). toothpaste can be used to clean jewelry. turmeric has antiseptic properties. carom seeds are good for gas troubles...

Hi sunny, well with the 101 ways with vinegar which Amber just mentioned I don't recall fixing the stomach ever being one of them, but of course we use olive oil first. I think the solution must always have been, if the olive oil doesn't cure you then reach for the vinegr. I thought vodka was used to clean jewelry, not toothpaste, not that it matters as I'm not very keen so don't have any to clean.

I used baking soda to stop my little one's mosquito bites from itching. If you mix it with a little water and make a paste out of it, you can put it on insect bites. It burns a little at first, but it stops the itch. I thought about doing that, because I read somewhere that it is also supposed to help with canker sores. I didn't want to put anything on the bite that she couldn't put in her mouth, since little ones will never leave anything alone. It worked great, and the doctor said it was a great idea.

Hi purplealabaster, I thought I'd heard everything going for insect bites but haven't come across that one. Luckily nothing is attracted to my son and he never gets bitten, whilst they adore me, but I think if they get me the results need a bit more effort than baking powder as I'm allegic to them.

Ahhh yes, I do not think that baking soda would work for an allergy.
My little one is technically allergic to mosquitoes, but the doctor said that it is a mild allergy that will go away as she grows up. That is a very good thing, since most allergies get worse over time.

Well, I decidedI was going to start eating a healthy breakfast, so bought loads of Oatsosimple - porridge oats with flavours in them (I only like the honey ones). But once I bought them, they just sat in the cupboard, while I continued to make my fatty, unhealthy breakfast choices!
Unfortunately, now they're probably past their use by date, I can't think of a use for them at all, so probably be used to weigh the bin down! Makes me feel so guilty when I consider people who don't have enough to eat at all, how much for granted we take it, so if anyone can think of a use, give us a shout! (Doubtful! LOL!)
Kudos on the dual use for olive oil though!

Hi Louc, don't bin the oastosimples, they make lovely biscuits or flapjacks, nice and unhealthy to match your breakfast. They are still healthy though it's just all the golden syrup that's not so good for you but if you can be more restrained than me once you've made them there you are.
For other ideas you should pop into the end of Holly's box, I'm sure she'll have even more suggestions.

Oh and I refuse to explain pe one more time. If you go to the icon at the top right of the page someone opened a discussion asking what it was the other day and I revealed all (yet again) there. If the rabbit had just had a bit more backbone when she named it people wouldn't need to keep asking, not your fault at all, just blame the rabbit.

I saw you are fed up with vinegar, so I can safely say that in my kitchen, it's either me or vinegar. Don't like the stuff a bit.
Coming back to question, we use olive oil just to apply on dry skin
Too expensive to use as cooking oil. Also.... well most of the edible things are used as cosmetics as well. Not by me though! I like my own self

Hi fugi, good, another non vinegar response. Food as cosmetics, I wonder what I've got in the fridge which would work. Brie? No, I'm definitely eating that as it's so good. Greek yogurt, no, I'll be eating that too. Radishes, no, they are for alongside the brie.
Working the other way round my son did find an eyeliner in the deep freeze once - I'd completely forgot I put it in there when it was melting from the heat.

Hi jillhill, well you're number 12 here and I could just as easily said it to numbers 10 or 11, but everyone has said the same thing now, vinegar and baking soda. Actually its just occured to me I've been thinking of bicarb.
Do you mean baking powder of bicarbonate of soda? I use both in baking.
I thought someone would come up with a unique use for jam or or cinnamon sticks but its all vinegar.

I dont know a bunch of stuff probably. I always seem to have lots of food most of which I dont seem to eat. I like buying food and grocery shopping and it is somehtin that I wish that I could actually more of it. I am always working and dont seem to get time anymore to do that.

Hi snowy, well it sounds as if you like grocery shopping but if you don't eat what you buy you really should find another use for it before it all goes off. I know I always get too much salad stuff as its such a long drive to get it nice and fresh but then some of it always goes off before I can eat it and I end up throwing slimey lettuces away.

hi thea well when we had our own apartment still, I couldn't find the four in one oil so my son had some peanut oil he used for frying, and I grabbed that and poured a liberal amount of oil in the track of the shower door as it was hard to slide, worked just fine and left a sort of peanutty odor in the bathroom. He remarked when he fixed his breakfast that his bathroom smelled like peanut butter. I said, well have you got a big imagination. then he looked at the level of peanut oil. oh thats where that went? I laughed, yes, could not find the four in one oil. He grinned, well thats one way to unstick it. My own bathroom did not have a shower so I always used his shower instead as it was a walk in one, and since I am handicapped I have to use a showerinstead of tub.

Hi Hatley, I've never heard of four in one oil, what on earth is it? Oil is excellent for sliding doors, shutters, catches, all sorts of things which need loosening. I didn't know that peanut oil smelt of peanut butter mind you I have no idea what peanut butter smells like as I've never used it. I know it goes in satay sauce though.

I know, and every last one of them invented by a Greek. Don't want mosquito bites, rub vinegar all over your body BEFORE going out in public. Possibility of head lice in a local kindergarten, rub vinegar in your hair, fancy a bit of sun protection, anoint yourself with vinegar.
