After two games in the world series I have learned a few things that I would like to discuss.
First part is how dominant Cliff Lee is. Now he faced the Dodgers and the Rockies and he dominated both teams respectively. However, when you pitch 8 scoreless innings before you let up a run against an American League team and having to deal with the designated hitter rather than the pitcher then that says something. He struck out A-Rod and Texeria 5 times and had I believe 9 total for the night. Cliff Lee was by far the biggest pick-up in the second half of the season.
C.C Sabathia was worth the money. Yes he lost his game, but for the 7 innings he was in there he kept the Yankees close. While his command was off and he had trouble against Utley, he still remained dominant throughout a very solid Phillies line-up.
Pedro was the correct game two choice. Just like C.C Sabathia, Pedro kept the game close and allowed 2 runs through 6 and 1/3 innings. Like Sabathia he made two pitch mistakes that hitters Matsui and Texeria jumped on. If possible I'd try to have him pitch again at some point in this series even if it is a relief roll.
Yankees bullpen is worse than the Phillies. Phil Hughes isn't even near the great reliever he was towards the end of the year and Chamberland hasn't produced either. Chamberland doesn't have the explosiveness he had a few years ago when he was throwing fastballs in the upper 90's. The Yankees have Rivera, but how far can these starting pitchers for the Yankees go in the game in order to get to Rivera before the other relievers? The Phillies tonight came in from the bullpen and only let up an extra run that they weren't even responsible for. The Phillies bullpen if they can continue to produce will prove to be a valuable asset against the Yankees who have more questions at this point.
Interesting Matchups?
The interesting matchup is going to be A.J Burnett against Cliff Lee in a possible game five matchup. They both dominated their pitching matchups only giving up a run each and being dominate all game. Cliff Lee by far has the advantage and I would say Lee would win the game, but if the Burnett of tonight shows up it would be a long pitching duel.
The final interesting matchup is if the series went to six games and we saw a Pedro vs Pettite matchup. These guys have history against each other with the Yankee and Red Sox matchups, so it could be exciting to see these guys representing their teams in the World Series.
The final thing is the edge. Who do I give the edge to? I still like the Yankees. Cole Hamels is going to possibly be a problem for the Phillies while Pettite has been fairly solid in the post-season yet again. Not only that, but the manager for the Phillies Manuel will more than likely not have Lee pitch on three day rest to matchup with C.C Sabathia. This means Sabathia will have to face the Phillies fourth guy in the rotation and you have to give the edge to C.C Sabathia. As of right now I have the Yankess winning games 3 and 4, losing game 5, and closing out the series in game 6 during the possible (and I'm hoping) matchup of Pettite and Pedro.
I would like to know what you all think about the World Series so far. Do you find it boring because it has been more of a pitching duel? Is it exciting? What team do you think is going to win with only 5 game remaining? Who do you give the edge too? Who's bullpen is more of a weakness? How much longer do you think the series will last for?
