No more clothes dryers for me!

I was readinbg the post about soap here and thought that I hadn´t shared the lots I save by not using the dryer. I have hangers, one for each garment I wash. I hang them as soon as the washing cycle finishes. If there is sun, I put them outside to dry. But in winter I don´t use the dryer either. I put the hangers in the bathroom. I like to have that room temperate so they dry there.
Clothes get dried AND ironed. I do that with my hands while they are wet.
So I cut the electricity bill both in drying and in ironing.
How do you save there? Do you still use the dryer even in summer? How about ironing?
Take care

I have a dryer but don't like to use it until/unless it's absolutely necessary. I have some sweaters that will stretch if hung to dry, so I lay them out, but don't have enough room to do them all. I sometimes put them in the dryer to finish.
Dryers not only use electricity, they're expensive to buy or replace and they wear out your clothes, too.
Like you, I don't use fabric softener and much prefer towels, jeans, dish towels and the like to be line dried. I don't mind ironing when needed, but there isn't much that really needs it if you hang the clothes carefully. I have a clothesline just outside my back door and use it year around.

I´m sorry for not having commented before. Specially since I think like you do. I do the same for sweater: put a dry towel and lay them on it. Sometimes, in summer, I put them outside with another towel over them. I have a nice terrace table that serves for many purposes.

Congrats for saving a lot from your electric bill. Here in our country we seldom use the drier. We dry our clothes by hanging it on hangers and put them outside. Rain or shine we do this. If its raining we have a place inside the house where we can hang our clothes.
We too tried our best to cut on electric bills... if we can do the washing manually we will and we really do.

I don´t wash manually because I have discovered it is more expensive.
. Due to my arthrosis I can´t wash or rinse with cold water while the washer does that. What I do is to wait until I have a machine full. And I check and handwash garments that are too soiled. That doesn´t happen often as I live alone.
In my country machines are used by all people more every day. Unfortunatly, the customs we copy first from the developed countries are the worse. The youngsters here are having weight problems with the arrival of fast food and the quantity of unnecessary cleaning products that people use are a shame.

you're right obesity cases if really growing fast due to lack of physical activities-- everything is becoming so easy and convenient for everyone. you'll set the timer then seat down and the machine will do everything for you. now while waiting, you watch tv, eat more and eat some more so what do we expect --- weight gain!

I always use my dryer. I haven't really thought about how much extra it adds on to my electricity bill each month. Are your clothes not still after they dry from being hung up? I might have to try that and see how much it saves me in a month.

Sorry for not answering before. Clothes last longer if they are not put in the dryer. At the dryer there´s a lot of friction. You can "iron" the garments with your hands and put them in hangers. It does save.

I am in ways like you I dont use the dryer to dry clothes we hang them on a clothes line here in the house all I was out was the clothes pins but I can hang atleast 2-3 loads of laundry at a time and they dry fast so then I dont have to worry about doing without clothes.

You are saving a lot of energy and as a side benefit, your electricity bill should be a lot lower. Good for you!!!

I know you are frugal in many ways, friend. And weach one of us does as much as we can do. THere are many things I used to do but can´t do anymore. But ironing makes me holler in pain so I just declare every item wash$wear. In summer I have a couple of clothes that must be ironed and I take them to my youngest daughter´s home. She has a wonderful maid that used to work for me before Tomás got sick. I go there with my wrinckled clothes, we have a coffe together and chat a bit and she irons for me.

i use our dryer only for a short time. i generally let the dryer work for a few minutes ( like 10) and then take them out and hang them up (whether it be on hangers or what) this way they dont get that stiff as a board feel! lol. i find if you do that, then you dont have to iron either.

I personally use my dryer, but then again I really don't have anywhere to hang our clothes after washing them. Since it's only the two of us, we don't really do a lot of laundry...maybe only 2 days a week...so it's not like we are constantly running the dryer.

That is very good. I use the dryer for about 10 minutes per load then I hang eveything on hangers I use the stairway to hang them, I have a stairway that has posts on it and I hand the hangers on the post. I like to dry the in the dryer for a just a few minutes with a fabric softening sheet to keep the static cling away and pull the wrinkles out a bit, the rest come out with the hanging. I rip teh fabric softener sheet in half and use each half twice.

I don´t use any kind of fabric softener and have to use only one type of hypoallergenic soap. It´s funny, my skin is tough as sun goes, but other things in the air bother it.

I still use a dryer because it helps dewrinkle the clothes and then I don't have to iron. I also don't like towels dried by the air because no matter how much softner you put in the wash it will not keep your towels drying soft. They will still be hard. I do have a new energy saving washer and dryer so that helps alot with the bills.

I suppose all that is a matter of custom. I prefer a towel that is a little hard. It "looks" clean.
I never use softner either. Just plain detergent. And I don´t iron either.

There are only me and my husband so I only do laundry once a week. I do wash in warm water not hot to save. I dry on permanment press so I do not have to iron my clothes.

Hi,friend,we are far behind in using electrical facilities[VCD,LCD TV,MICROWOVEN,WASHING MACHINES,HEATERS,DRYERS...] invented for the benefit of people. We have 90% of people still wash clothes with hands in house [town and city] and near ponds, canals in villages.Of course as i am living in town,we have those, but sorry those things all look after my wife.In general also washing will be done by here one caste[people who are in the profession of washing and iron the clothes since ages]and they only do that. From the past 10 years there is a bit change in this attitude and people start their washing activity within the family, but iron must be do by washer man only.
Have a nice time.

Hi friend,
I had heard about castes in India but did not know that applied to washing and other chores too. In my country, many women my class would not do a lot of things I take pride in doing. Only yesterday I varnished a shelf for my cacti. That work is usually done by a man I pay but I fired him two weeks ago and needed that. I said I can do anything I want to. And I did. I don´t do things like that on a regular basis, but I know I can do a lot more than many people my age do. Will helps.
I have always thought your country is one of the most amazing in the world. And for many things it is where everything began for mankind.
Have a lovely day.

In winter it's really hard for stuff to dry so we use the dryer for things that can be put in there. Otherwise, we let them drip-dry to save electricity, too. We only really use the dryer for beddings because we don't have enough space to let them drip dry, living in an apartment. For clothes, it's alright.
